I can't find my way around the new A2K

I am really lost.

I am having trouble finding old threads that I remember were good. But I don't remember the titles, and sorting through thousands of pages of posts is very tiresome.

Also, I would like to browse the forums on philosophy, and sometimes the religion forums. But now it keeps getting mixed in with all these other topics that are meaningless to me. Metal roofs, what my parents did wrong... I never knew there was so much trivial chatter on a2k.

Now threads seem to be organized according to popularity. A shame that, since it tends to narrow down the selection represented until we are all staring at identical pages, and pretty soon making identical posts about identical issues.

I used to love a2k, and I used to spend many hours in here each day. Now it feels like a raccon stole my compass and a crocodile ate my map. And meanwhile my love has wandered into the wilderness and I can't seem to get it back.

Now I have to know what I want to look for. In this new looking a2k I can no longer browse a selection of threads within a category of my chosing and become intrigued by a facinating thought that wouldn't occur to me in a million years if left to my own musings.
Now I lose my appetite after scrolling through endless trivia and topics that are not within my field of interest whatsoever.

Maybe this new a2k is easier for the moderators to manage. But it's not as much fun as it used to be, and I for one feel the loss.

If there's a new and brilliant way to navigate this site now that keeps all the old thrills and surprises alive, please enlighten me, since I need a helping hand and a guiding voice from time to time.

@Cyracuz,
I'm sleepy now but can help you on that tomorrow, and others may show up in the meantime. Don't despair, it all becomes accessible.

Meantime, I'm glad you enjoyed New York.

@Cyracuz,
Me agree it's simply not as user friendly and intuitive, but I've learned to live with it.

The good news is that if it's not keyword search that you are missing all the other ways of viewing threads on the old software exist here, and then a couple more. Let me see if I can show you this software's equivalents to the old software.

Here's the old philosophy and debate forum for example:

http://able2know.org/tag/philosophy_and_debate/

Also check out the philosophy tag, which the philosophy discussions have been tending to use more now:

http://able2know.org/tag/philosophy/

On the home page, all the old forums are listed as tags. So the old "forum index" is now the home page. Any of the old forums can be found there, and at the bottom of the list there are links to view new ones that have been made since.

The only place they are ordered by popularity is in the "popular topics" view. That is a new one and is the only area of the whole site that sorts by popularity. The other main views (my topics, my posts, new topics, new posts) all work exactly how the old ones did. There's also another new one which is "my tags", which is a view of all topics you have tagged (and it organizes your topics by your tags so that you can separate them by category).

Other than the search feature, which doesn't yet work as well as the old one did every way we used to list topics are found here.

But you really can! Just go to the home page and pick one, and they are also listed on the side of every place threads are listed.

To me it sounds like the big thing you are missing is the old forum index, which is now the new home page of tags. If there was another way you used to view topics on the old site that you are missing here let me know which it was and I'll point you to the same view of topics on this software.

Of course, if you want to find a thread you have started, you can click on "My Topics". Now, some people start hundreds, and maybe thousands of threads. They might have to use "Tags". For the rest of us, My Topics is usually pretty quick.

One more thing. The old thread index carried over to the extent that if you posted in someone's thread in the philosophy forum, you automatically have a tag on that topic. Go to "My Tags", find the philosophy tag, and click it. Your stuff will be in there, somewhere.

Anyhow, notice that if you log out for some reason, and come back, you can see pages of threads, not just the ones that have been active since your logout. I used to just hate that.

Thank you all very much for this info that was right in front of my eyes the whole time, but I failed to see for some reason.

My faith is restored Smile

@Cyracuz,
It ain't perfect, but I happen to favor it over the original. It took me longer than most to adapt to the tagging system. You can tag any thread with your own tag. I have three or four just tagged "Cats". That's just me, of course.

Trivia? The thread about parents wasn't trivia at all. It was an excellent, serious discussion, involving many A2Kers. Which is why it is "popular" (or rated well). The rating indicates the number of contributors to a thread, plus "thumbs ups" (approval indicators). (I can't vouch for the "metal roofs" thread because I don't know.)
Ya know, you shouldn't be so ready to pooh pooh threads you haven't actually checked out, Cyracuz. Might broaden your horizons, even! Wink

@msolga,
Oh, it was just a frustrated rant, you know? In the same position, I would have carried on about all the pointless philosophical threads.

@msolga,
Been meaning to ask about those new electric woks, but it's pretty late to start something that contentious. Maybe tomorrow?

@msolga,
Thanks msolga.

It wasn't my intention to "pooh pooh" any threads. I spoke from a viewpoint of personal interest.
The headline of that thread suggested to me an angle to a topic that I find a waste of time and energy. That is based on my own outlook and how i define problems and potential solutions. Not neccesarily true to anyone but myeslf.

Like I said, I look for titles that catch my interest, and in my experience, the most popular ones suit me the least. Smile

I think that's probably what most of us do, Cyracuz.

I hope you're on top of the navigating thing now. Smile

@roger,
But I've been tagging my way through all the Pets and Garden threads (Pets and Gardens? Well, once in a while they do work as a combo, and in the old days, there was only so much room for categories), and have tagged many many many as 'cats'. Whatta team.

I'll close by mentioning that it is useful to look at the little white window at the top right and click in your interest, for example, cats, or philosophy. Also useful to look to the right and peruse the choices there, which are popular tags.
