CPR (canadian pacific railway) train going through the KICKING HORSE PASS

Quote:
Kicking Horse Pass (el. 1627 m, 5339 ft) is a high mountain pass across the Continental Divide of the Canadian Rockies on the Alberta/British Columbia border, and lying within Yoho and Banff National Parks. The pass is of historical significance because the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway was constructed between Lake Louise, Alberta and Field, British Columbia using this route in 1880s, in preference to the originally planned route through the more northerly Yellowhead Pass.

The pass was first explored in 1858 by the Palliser Expedition led by Captain John Palliser. The pass and the adjacent Kicking Horse River were given their names after James Hector, a naturalist, geologist, and surgeon who was a member of the expedition, was kicked by his horse while exploring the region.

we rode the train from vancpuver to calgary through th KHP in 1987 - quite a thrill !

the ONTARIO NORTHLAND aka THE POLAR BEAR EXPRESS .
it runs from COCHRANE , ontario to MOOSONEE , on HUDSON BAY , ontario .
because of the MUSKEG - a soft , peat-type soil - there is no road connection between these two points in northern ontario - you go by train , canoe or fly-in .
the train stops on demand to let off and take on passengers , such as natives living in the bush , trappers , fishermen , hunters or anyone else .
from MOOSENEE it's only a short boat ride across the MOOSE RIVER to MOOSE FACTORY - one of the former FACTORIES (outposts) of the HBC (hudson bay company) .
it's actually only 300 km from cochrane to moosenee but the train takes 4 1/2 hours for the trip - slow speed over the muskeg and stopping for passengers - a fun ride to get to know the locals .
