german soldiers would usually cross ANY bridge without being in step .
the command was : "OHNE TRITT , MARSCH ! " .
even strong bridges can be endangered by many people "marching in step" across it , i believe .

bridge built across the ELBE river at hamburg under napoleon's reign - he wasn't all bad !

http://www.alt-veddel.de/napoleon.jpg

btw it's been replaced in the meantime , but it took napeleon to have the first bridge built !

HAMBURG AND THE BEATLES :
Kaiserkeller - 38 Grosse Freiheit. This one is almost too famous to talk about. The Beatles played there 31Jul60 and 4Oct to 30Nov60. The club has gone back to calling itself Kaiserkeller and it is clearly marked. There is also a little plaque (in German) explaining the site.

btw GROSSE FREIHEIT = BIG FREEDOM
(it's were the sailors went when coming to hamburg to enjoy "their freedom" and spent their money ! the girls were always welcoming - and still are , i understand Shocked Laughing )

http://webs.wichita.edu/mschneegurt/hamburg/kaiserkeller.gif

i know this place but it was before the beatles came to hamburg .
