Quote:
THE CANADIAN PORCUPINE.
It climbs the trees and strips them clean
Of leaf, and fruit, and bark;
Then, creeping where no life is seen,
O'er branches grim and stark,
Begins anew, the bark beneath,
The endless grind of claws and teeth,
Till trees, denuded, naked rise
Like spectres painted on the skies.
Fretful it may be, as its quills are sharp,
But with its teeth it stills the sylvan harp.
plenty of them around in the thousand islands area , just a houlf-hour drive from here

This is a dog that doesn't know when to quit.
A vet sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills.
The dog survived, and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.......
Choose your battles wisely.

a/t a vet on radio phone-in show , dogs hardly ever learn a lesson when it comes to porcupines , their natural instincts simply take over
plenty of these fellows around here
btw they are called "wasch-baer"(wash bear) in german because they wash their food before eating it - germans considered the first "imports" of the 'coons cuddly pets - until they took over and became rather a menace because they have hardly any natural enemies there
