Even the designers didn't predict how overwhelmingly powerful the H-bomb would be. In fact, at this first test, "Mike" blew a crater over a mile wide and several hundred feet deep, causing some witnesses to weep openly. The mushroom cloud went up 60,000 feet in the first few seconds and eventually reached the stratosphere. Many people involved in the weapons program changed their minds about supporting it after witnessing the test.

No H-bomb was ever dropped on civilians.
