Yes, they are sold primarily to gated communities in the U.S. The original manufacturer was an American company, Global Electric Motorcar, i.e. "GEM". Thus, the "gemcar". The two seater version is often used as a private golf cart, while the 4-seater is strictly for transport. GEM was subsequently purchased by Daimler Chrysler.
