I have a frequent blasting of popups, all with the title "Messenger Service". They are for the most part popups advertising popup killers but from time to time I get the porn popup. If I don't completely shut down my computer, I will spend upwards of 10 minutes closing out windows from the popup adds that hit my computer every 10-20 minutes. I have downloaded McAfee's free firewall....but still the popups come. I tried downloading Norton off of the internet (paid for it) but for whatever reason when it tries to connect to the Symantec site, the software can't find an internet connection....same with the McAfee. I have a internet connection through a cable modem and never have a problem connecting. Why is this software not finding the internet connection? I am not savvy enough with a computer to figure this out but it seems like a port somewhere has been closed to prevent me from using a firewall properly. Please.....any help would be so appreciated. Thank you.
Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel (unless you are using "classic" control panel view) and go to Administrative Tools.
Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
Change the startup type to Disable and click Apply at the bottom.
Click OK to exit window.
Those are instructions for XP. Lemme know if you don't use XP.
Also, Alt + F4 will get rid of popups!
Misti,
That just closes them as they occur. The procedure Craven is suggesting blocks them ever appearing on your computer.
Just as a minor technical note, it won't actually block them from appearing, rather it prevents your computer from being capable of accepting them. Also, stopping the Messenger service won't substitute using a popup blocker against ads from websites, and removing popup-serving scumware installed on your machine, if you have problems with either of those things.
When I had to re-install Windows some time ago, I forgot, why I did get those "messenger pop-ups".
Fortunately I remembered the procedure that Craven described here some time later.
