Adam Goldstein, 'DJ AM'

Associated Press
NEW YORK - DJ AM, a Philadelphia native and sought-after disc jockey who became a celebrity in his own right with a glamorous lifestyle, was found dead yesterday at his apartment, which had drug paraphernalia in it, a law enforcement official said. There was no evidence of foul play.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, 36, was famous for past relationships with the reality TV star Nicole Richie and the actress-singer Mandy Moore.

He died nearly a year after surviving a South Carolina plane crash that killed four people.

In what may have been his last interview, Mr. Goldstein answered questions from Phrequency.com, Philly.com's music spin-off Web site. The interview was posted Wednesday.

"I am incredibly excited to be involved in the evolution with Dusk at Caesars," Mr. Goldstein said, referring to the new nightclub at Caesars Atlantic City, where his last appearance was Tuesday.

Mr. Goldstein grew up in Rittenhouse Square and told Phrequency.com that he visited Philadelphia often.

Dusk released a statement last night: "We are devastated by the loss of Adam Goldstein, our dear friend and valued member of the Dusk family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. He was a true talent who will be greatly missed."

Celebrities and fans instantly shared their reactions on Twitter, where "RIP DJ AM" was the No. 1 topic yesterday. His Twitter page is http://twitter.com/DJ_AM

@farmerman,
he was mostly a club DJ, he gained mainstream notice a year ago when he and a member of the band blink 182 were the only survivors of a plane crash that killed 4 others, he suffered severe burns

Like farmer, I have to say this dude was a total and complete stranger to me until I saw the obit and wondered idly why an unknown was being eulogized.

So he was famous for dating somebody who was famous for being famous. That's like three degrees of separation from actual fame.

@joefromchicago,
it is not that simply, DJ AM, as has train wreck Lohan's chick squeeze, have taken in the neighborhood of $50,000 per night for spinning tunes, not everyone can pull that off. DJ AM has for years been the hotest and best paid DJ. LIke Paris he had the talent for self promotion if none other, which in America goes far and is repected.

@shewolfnm,
Crack was long his drug of choice. Interesting that it was all daddy's fault

interesting.

crack is coke just cooked.

Not surprised unfortunately.

But he was excellent at what he did and successful beyond some peoples imagination. Odd how those people lose sight of that for addictions

Being the best DJ in America is kinda' like being the tallest midget in the circus.

@shewolfnm,
There's a lot of money to be made in the celeb d.j. world (and even semi-celeb dj world). A former colleague's husband often has gigs in Eastern Europe, Florida and Japan. Seriously big money. One gig paid for their new monster mansion. Kinda freaky to think that spinning music in a Russian or Polish supernightclub can pay so much.

Another young guy I know left last night for a 2 night spinning gig in Vegas. Again, more money than I make in a year to be made in 2 nights.

$50 k a night was what DJ AM would get for a garden variety American club night, but ya. Just as some famous rock bands have collected $1 million for doing some rich schmucks party DJ AM and the rest do go do special gigs around the world for outrageous sums of money. Who is the fool here.....those who are collecting these paydays, or those of us who are not?

looking online it appears that the conscious is that DJ AM was far from being the best American DJ, he was however the hottest and best paid, which made him not particularly well liked in the DJ world. He was great at self promotion, and good enough at being a DJ to make a great career out of it.

Note: he was known to help new DJ's that he liked, in particular he is most responsible for Lindsey's on/off girlfriend Sam being successful.
