You go girl.

Thanks for the Rhythm Traders link. That's where I bought Mo's drums!

@boomerang,
Rhythm Traders has some fantastic instructors - when I asked about drum circles in your area, I was pointed in their direction.

Is the 30 day thing being presented as an up or a down? ie. if you play every day, you'll be able to continue going to class v if you don't practice every day, you won't be able to continue going to class? carrot/stick - and which works best for Mo (if either)?

@ehBeth,
I have a memory of taking over the drum set at a smallish party back when I was around twenty. I was a fool, of course, but it became a group memory, as it had been an odd outbreak from a shy person. I didn't even drink then, so that wasn't it. Drum mania...

@ossobuco,

That reminds me of another musical instrument
that I began to play which contributed significantly to my popularity.
I was the first guy on my block to get a televison in 1951.
(In those days, if u wanted to watch TV, u had to wait
until 5 PM, unless u were satisfied to see snow n static.)
It continued until around midnite.

My neighbors were eager to crowd in to watch,
but if any of them had offended me: I kept him out.

It's being prestented as "here's the deal" - if you want to keep taking lessons you'll practice.

I haven't even made it an "every day" thing. I haven't set a time limit.

He just needs to show some inititive. He needs to show me that he wants to continue.

Neither carrot nor stick works with Mo.

I've tried carrots and that backfired in a BIG way. He started to try to bribe me. "I'll (behave) if you......." Pointing out that I'm unbribable seemed to give him permission to misbehave.

So out came the stick.

That just made things worse.

Did I ever mention that change is a WHOLE FRIKKEN OTHER PLANET around here?

@OmSigDAVID,
We got a tv in 1955. Our dad, a rather brilliant electrical engineer who worked on "stuff" during WW2 and later was involved in the development of the Navy's 1st computer, didn't think it would ever catch on. We were allowed to watch one hour a night, choosing from shows between 7-9 pm.

Negotiation, of itself,
is not necessarily bad.
Unless he tries to corrupt u to do something rong,
maybe u 'll find that there is room to work something out.

In my time, I 've seen & facilitated a lot of agreements
between disputing parties.

@realjohnboy,

That 's where the Japs went rong with Betamax:
thay just assumed that no one 'd be interested
in watching TV for more than an hour a nite,
so thay made the tape cartridge too small.

@OmSigDAVID,
We had a tv in '50 (my dad worked for rko). This is a tangent to the thread, of course.
Back to the matter of practice.

@realjohnboy,

Yes.
Our minds wandered and wondered.
It was not until 1961 that I got a remote control & color
and only about 5 years ago, since I got a 7 foot HDTV. Back to Mo and practice.

@OmSigDAVID,
I'm sure he can, but the sticks are probably rough on the keyboard.

My son had a piano when he was 8 and he hated the dullness of practice. I got him a trumpet when he was 11, but he wouldn't practice so it went back to the shop. However, left to his own devices, he taught himself how to play the piano and later the guitar, he is very gifted but can't read music and hates the routine of practicing....he wanted to master the things he liked music wise and had no interest in the basic skill build. My nephew taught himself how to play the drums and played with a local group before my brother tossed him out. Now he is back in Texas with his mother and doing well.

I don't know the way to go and your son is still very young, learning an instrument is very disciplined and can be slow going, and students sometimes find it insufferably tedious. I would suggest (just in passing) if you have annoying neighbors you could put on some heavy metal and open the windows and let him bang the drum all night. Just a thought! That might get him going.

This shows the relative merits of the RADIO.
There is not much practice required
b4 one is proficient in its use.
It is portable.
It is worthy of earnest consideration.

or u can buy him records of guys playing the drums

whatever songs he likes . . . (Cyclo to the contrary notwithstanding)

Well hell.....

Mo hasn't been practicing so I knew there were only a few classes left to go. We had to give 30 days notice so that was supposed to take us to mid-September.

Mo was sick today so we had to cancel today's lesson.

Then tonight I get a phone call from the school -- they have someone wanting to take the spot so we don't have to pay for the two weeks after all blahblahblah.

So now I'm going to have to tell Mo that there aren't any more lessons in the pipeline and I feel completely crummy.

In some way's it's good. Mo is terrible at goodbyes. Having to say goodbye to his teacher would have been really hard.

But not getting to say goodbye might be even worse.

****.

@panzade,
Don't knock it. I confess I took accordian lessons. Embarrassed

Played the accordian until I got married and we were young and broke and hocked the darn thing so many times I finally just sold it.
