apart from chemical vapor deposition to form thin films and in deposition of sub freezing air to form ice and frost,what artificial processes can be used to deposit or condense a large volume of gas into a dense product other than freezing.

Many of the metallic appearing parts in a car, like window cranks that look like chrome plated metal are really plastic, coated with what they call vacumn deposited aluminum. I don't know what goes into the process.
