Baroness Amos has been appointed as leader of the Lords following the death of Lord Williams of Mostyn.

Before, she succeeded Clare Short, who quit the government following the war with Iraq, as international development secretary. (But the appointment of a peer to head the department sparked criticism, despite her being the first black woman to be appointed to the top rank of government.)

Lady Amos was the first black woman in the Lords and the the first black member of cabinet.
