Work was once again drudgery,
had a feeling of accomplishment
yet still felt infinitesimal.
Afterwards, stopped by the bakery
because I thought indulgence
would make things less dismal.
The ride home was empty.
The house I found empty
just as I'd feared.
I was alone,
there was nothing to hear
save my dog's yapping
and the snap-crack of my beer.
At least I still had those.
The alcohol went down nice
but I was full of holes
and as empty as the house,
knowing that time hadn't froze
but wishing that it had.
Looked at the bakery box
and felt really ******* bad.
Was I waiting for nothing?
No... she came... looking sad.
I gave her my gift of sweets,
she smiled.
She gave me a thick volume and said,
"I know you've wanted to
read this for a while".
I felt relief and wondered
about delaying the inevitable.
