I quit about 13 years ago.

Since my bacterial lung infection in 1999 and the resulting lung damage, I haven't been able to be around heavy smoke or strong fumes of any kind without severe coughing; and breathing problems if I'm exposed for too long.

@Butrflynet,
I quit in 1997 after 35 years of smoking. I am probably alive today because of this.

@chai2,
Quit cold the second time in 1982. But I smoked like a fiend before all that, since 1961. So far so good on the lung stuff, though I've long had, mmmm, vasomotor rhinitis, and a kind of reactive asthma... probably starting around 1961 as well - but, again, so far, so good.

Sadly, my allergies improved when I no longer had cats around and we remodelled. I do like cats a great deal, but have to steer clear.

On smoke, yes, it gets my nose running and asthma perking up. Frowns at Dys.

Well, no, I'm not really frowning at Dys on the cigs now. That's another whole subject, but I need to keep clear of smoke myself.

My dad was a chain smoker for most of his life (he's been off it for almost 10 years now, cold turkey), and watching him wheeze and hack all those years pretty effectively weeded out any desire I might have had to start.

@ossobuco,
I'll add to my post re 1961. A few things happened - I was living in LA, then smog ville to the extreme, I started smoking, I got contact lenses, and I took a history class in Haines Hall, wherein I probably disturbed the whole roomful of students of Dr. Meyer with my mad sneezing. I was a sneezeless person before all that. Pass the cigs...

Smoked daily from the age of 15 or so until around 28. Only about 5 to 10 cigs a day for most of that period, but for about 4 years smoked 1 to 2 packs a day.

Now only smoke very occasionally -- have been working on the same pack for over a year now. Still do enjoy that one or two a month, but don't at all see it becoming a habit again.

@patiodog,
I have a friend who did that, so I get that some can take cigs as an occasional amusement. Me, no. Although when I last quit, the '82 time, I did have one, okay, say four over four visits, with a professor teacher of my husband... and I did not just start up with it all again. Maybe it was a combo of wonderful and weird - she was a rhetorics professor of much wit, but her home was a smokey asylum. When I last saw her was my last cig.

I never smoked anything but pot, but I sure miss the smell of cig smoke. Up here in Washington State some Indian casinos allow smoking, and I was in one awhile back by chance as I normally don't go to casinos. The memories.....

Ooh, you're tempting me, Roger!

My parents both smoked 2+ packs a day. As a young teenager, my mother gave me the chore of cleaning all their ashtrays. That'll pretty much turn anyone off the idea.
