How many books do you own?

You can just ballpark it if you don't actually know. I won't mind.

I would say that I probably have about a hundred fifty books.

I have a friend who can't understand why people would want to keep a book after they've read it. He's a library kind of guy all the way. I, on the other hand, buy all my books, and keep them in bookshelves, like a normal person.

@djjd62,
Too many.

Keep trying to pare down to no avail. And now a good friend of mine who owns a used bookstore has started sending sozlet books -- they're coming in faster than I can get them out. We're at the stacked-on-the-floor stage (again).

I'd ballpark it at about a thousand. (I have one big bookcase here, one of eight shelves [the only one I counted] has 25 books on it, so say that's an even 200 -- that can't be more than 1/5 of the total books we own. Most of our bookcases are in the other room.)

@sozobe,
Damned if I know.

I have recently purged a few hundred, and still have 14 big bookcases full.

Too bloody many!!

@kickycan,
Oh, wow. Three five-shelf bookcases, loaded double where possible (books in front of books, books on top of books), three boxes of "to reads" that I can think of (might be four), about a dozen in the bed (in various states of being read), a bunch on the floor, and I don't know how many in my daughter's room.

About every two years she (the daughter) makes me sort through them but I don't give up easily. The only one I know I'll give up is Terry Brooks' Prophecy (somehow I have two copies)...

There is no such thing as too many books. Only too few shelves!

Holy ****, you people are bookaholics! Wow! I haven't got a lot of room. If I had a thousand books I'd have to move to a bigger apartment.

My daughter had to fill a form last month in which, among other questions, they asked her how many books are there in her house. That was easy-peasy: "more than 500".
My wife says we own more than a thousand. I say we do not reach that sum, but are near.

oh, Kicky, you don't know ANY bookoholics. You can't sit in their houses, their chairs are full of books!

Too many!! We're weeding out though - my daughter's children's books go
regularly to the library and I'll do the same with ours. I also give books to friends and neighbors to keep...

I have a thrift shop and a library within two blocks in either direction from my apartment. When I get close to a thousand, I guess those will be two good options for getting rid of some. Of course, I'll probably be retired and living near a beach somewhere by then, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

@kickycan,
Several hundred currently, and I've given away at least as many. Mostly boxes and boxes of sci-fi books in my attic. Every now and then I grab a bunch of boxes and haul them to a used bookstore and give them away.

@CalamityJane,
Probably around 500 - That was before my husbands uncle passed away - I have about 10 boxes full of Civil War and WWII books...that's probably around 200. I am not even counting the kids though...wow.

At the time I moved to America, it was 15 boxes, each about six cubic feet tall. To stick to round numbers, call it anything between 500 and 1000.

I lost about 400 books on my divorce (but regained some of them via my son).
I've given away perhaps 100 and thrown away -sold by the kilo- at least another 100.

@edgarblythe,
I'll estimate 400, and that's after giving up to 500 away - twice - plus routine cullings of books like police pocedurals. Some do relate to my landscape and art interests, and for years were either part of business, or a kind of foundation for the gallery and design work.

I actually think I have some more books at my parents' house. Oh, I forgot, I also have hardcover editions of almost every Stephen King book ever published, all packed in some boxes somewhere. He started writing right about when I started reading, so I kind of got hooked at an early age. I still have to get the hardcover as soon as any new Stephen King book comes out. That must be about forty books or so right there.

@kickycan,
I sold about 1000/1500 before I moved back to Tranna. Threw out another 200 or so. Sold another 200+ at a yard sale 4 or 5 years ago.

I've replaced them all, plus some. Somewhere around 2000 would be a safe guess. There are easily 100 on the stairs going up.

hmmmm there are still 3 or 4 boxes of cookbooks in the basement that never managed to get unpacked from mmmm 10 years ago. I think they can go this summer.

ohh, we're supposed to count the books still at our parents? mmmm I don't think I want to admit to the possible total.

@ehBeth,
My real downfall in the past 24 months or so was my discovery of BMV (booksmusicvideos) in The Annex. I can buy 4 or 5 good used books for the price of a magazine. Makes me way too happy.

I plan to buy a magazine to read on the subway home ... end up with an armful of books and a DVD or two.

@kickycan,
My wife keep threatening me with divorce every time I come home from B&N and god know how many books is in this house far far too many with floor to ceiling books shelves in one room and other books shelves all around my small townhouse.

My pointing out to my wife that she have a large basement in her house<a two homes two cities/states marriage> and have at least as many books as I do just more room and that along with the fact that JFK wife Jacqueline my generation role modal of fashion had an apartment jam with books are my defenses to her threats/complains.

It is was not that my first wife had her kids throw my books collection in a canal in 1982 and hurricane Andrew ruin a large fraction of my library in 1992 even I would had been force to agree that I have too many books.
