Some friends of mine are on the roller derby team here in Columbus and it looks super incredibly fun. It's all the brawling and physicality of pick-up b-ball but with fishnet stockings and campy names!! What's not to love?

One problem -- I'm too wimpy. I'm willing to dish out the pain but not take it.

So I guess I'll just cheer 'em on.

A good idea. I know some Roller Derby queens here in So CA and they are tough as nails. Not a sport for the timid.

@sozobe,
Been going to flat track roller derby here in Madison for a couple of years now. Good stuff. Will probably be at the bout against Rockford tomorrow.

An old friend from college is in a men's league in NY. It seems to be sprouting up all over.

@patiodog,
I didn't know there were men's leagues -- do they do the makeup and fishnets too, or do they do it straight?

I don't mind getting battered and bruised but I hate the idea of breaking a bone. And these gals are always breaking something, it seems like.

@sozobe,
Anthony Bourdain hung out with a group of the gals in Los Angeles during an episode of No Reservations. There was definitely a lot of discussion of broken bones and how fast they got back onto the rink. I'll stick with something with camp potential but little bone-break potential.

@sozobe,
Sounds like fun, but I would be worried about breaking bones too.
The last time I went ice skating with the kid, someone pushed me and I fell
backwards onto the ice. Lots of contusions and a hairline fracture on my elbow.

If you get enough protective gear on your knees, elbows and a good helmet, you'd minimize injuries - maybe.

I guess some of you are too young to remember back in the 60's when it came on television. Saturday afternoons. My mother and I looooooooved it. I used to know all of their names and handles but now all I remember is Joan Weston, The Blonde Amazon and Ann Cavello, who was famous for always changing her hair color.

Yeah, I'm not gonna do it. Too scared of the injuries. I just had a little fit while looking at some photos my friends had posted -- it looks SO FUN! And I'm nearing broken-record/ fangirl status with them, so had a little vent here instead.

Last night I was talking to E.G. about this and he said yeah, that's the same reason he doesn't have a motorcycle. He likes the idea, but it seems way too dangerous. We thought for a minute about how much cooler we'd be if he had a motorcycle and I was a roller derby girl. Then we sighed and accepted that we're too old and wimpy.

I guess it's time for tattoos.

Another great roller derby song:

Maybe you should start with something safer, soz, like hockey.

@boomerang,
Actually having this as a sport would rock...I mean like it is in the movie. Or perhaps a Running Man show. I'm not saying anyone has to die, but the plot of the game in that movie was brilliant, I would totally watch it.

Non-contact roller derby?

@ihateeverything,
I know what you mean, I do. I'm already pretty old though and it's a balance thing. If I get seriously hurt that messes up my ability to work out, which is really important to me (if I don't work out regularly I both put on significant weight and my mood takes a nosedive).

Plus I just plain don't want to get seriously hurt!

Non-contact roller derby, hmm. It's more the bashing that sounds fun though. If I could somehow bash while having immunity from being bashed, that'd be perfect!

@sozobe,
nah...shallow.

Look at what American presidents can get away with, just as one example.
