Killing them softly with chicken and dumplings.

I've been busy and haven't made the 1,000 trips to the grocery typically required to keep my tiny refridgerator stocked with enough food to keep everyone happy.

So today I had to put together something from nothing. I had a leftover roasted chicken from a day or two ago so I threw it in a pot with some vegetables, made a happy stock, and made some dumplings.

These aren't some sissy girl dumplings but the real deal -- made from scratch, rolled out, sliced up, stewed.

Yum!

Right?

Not according to my family.

Tomorrow for dinner?

Toast.

If they're lucky.

What do you cook that your family doesn't really like?

My family hates dumplings, nothing to do with the flavor, they can't get past the texture. Too weird for moderns I think.

Chicken and real, honest-to-god, home-made rolled dumplings?

Will you marry me?

Wally and I have very different tastes in foods.

Not saying he's a completely meat and potatoes guy, but more like that than I am.

He doesn't like a lot of Italian foods, well, Southern Italian.
Won't eat foods like tabouli, dolmas, hummus.

He's had sushi, didn't object, but wouldn't get it for himself.

I don't really keep that close track. If either of us don't care for what the meal is going to be, we'll just fix something else for ourselves. It's a trade off.

I feel so bad for Wally right now. He's having an endoscopy on Tuesday really early, so he couldn't eat today or tomorrow. I picking foods for myself that don't have an aroma, and eating them in another room.

He's sipping beef broth, apple juice and jello.

Laughing

That reminds me. Wally told me that years back, either he one his sisters, I forget which, told his mom that they really missed her homemade dumplings.

So, she mailed each of them a box of them.....regular post, in August.

She lived in IL, he and 2 siblings were in FL.

They called her to ask why she sent them each a box of green fuzz.

The way they tell the story is one of those laughing until you cry tales.

Why yes I will marry you, Mr. Setanta. Just take me away from these awful people and I'll be a lovely wife.

There's pleanty left over, edgar. Just come on by.

How could someone not like the texture of a dumpling? Seriously! They aren't getting good dumplings. I'm not saying mine are as good as Aunt Billie's but they're pretty good. Now, drop dumplings I can understand not liking the texture of.

Chai, that reminds me of when Mr. B had his mouth wired shut because of a broken jaw. For three weeks I couldn't eat at home without sneaking. The only consolation was knowing he was more miserable than me.
