After the great "Disappearing Socks Puzzle" this must rank second in the list of Unsolved Mysteries of Our Time.
Ive bought a series of pipe insulator tubes and wrap my cables for a sizeable run. This method employs discipline so that these cables dont default to their lazy ways.
I unhook the power cord from my laptop and carefully put it untangled into the carrying case. In the same pocket I also carry an extension cord in the carrying case for use as necessary and carry fold it up.
When I pull the power cord from the pocket it has a knot in it. And as often as not it is tangled with the extension cord. I use a wireless mouse now, but when I used a mouse with a cord it was also part of the mix.
My theory is that the dust bunnies under the bed who obviously eat the stray socks get bored from time to time and make various kinds of mischief.
I defy anybody to adequately rebut my theory.
Same reasons socks take a walk when you're doing laundry.
