My dog does this a bit if you say "bacon", "outside", or "walk".

Occasionally we get that with our dogs, but usually only when they recognize a word, but not the context. These dogs are pretty sharp, and their vocabulary grows apace. Certain words we have to spell--walk, beach--because otherwise they'll start tearing around the house like a couple of maniacs. But you have to careful even with spelling--we used to spell the word treat, but now they know what t-r-e-a-t means, so we have to come up with something new.

Dogs are pretty damned smart critters.

@Robert Gentel,
Gracie is the queen of the head tilt! I used to talk to her all the time just to watch it. Laughing, which is inevitable when I see this, made her tilt even further.

@Robert Gentel,
I don't remember Pacco doing that ever.
He did a close up right angle to me eye-to-eye thing, which is to say, a bit of a muzzle lift along with the eyes. Very direct.
He also often positioned himself to me at a right angle, further away, the better to watch; sometimes back to me at a right angle, the better to watch. I suppose that depended on the wolves out there.

@Robert Gentel,
Yes.

Or, when I had dogs, they did.

It's pretty common.

@dlowan,
Stinky has found that all dogs cock their heads at the human voice...

They have found that it intrigues the humans, even if they've no flippin clue as to what you want...

(they silently hope for food, exercise, or whatever it is you do for yer doggie)

as I interp... uh digest what he says, of course...

@Robert Gentel,
I saw this on AFV. WAY too cute! I think certain breeds are more prone to this behavior. My Frenchies do it but not to that extent.
