7.4 earthquake kills at least 39 in Guatemala
The earthquake along Guatemala's Pacific coast causes widespread damage. Many people are missing.

By Richard Fausset, Los Angeles Times
November 7, 2012, 5:07 p.m.
MEXICO CITY — A deadly earthquake rattled Guatemala on Wednesday, knocking out electricity, destroying dozens of buildings, and killing at least 39 people, with many more missing or buried, President Otto Perez Molina said.

The quake, which officials called the most powerful temblor to hit the Central American country in 36 years, occurred at 10:35 a.m. along the northern part of Guatemala's Pacific coast. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it as magnitude 7.4, while Guatemala's National Seismological Institute ranked it as magnitude 7.2.

Guatemalan officials initially confirmed three deaths in San Marcos, a city in the country's western interior, but continued revising the number upward as the day went on.

"We must regret the deaths of 39 people," Perez told journalists during an afternoon tour of some of the worst-hit areas, according to the newspaper El Nuevo Siglo. "It's a tragedy, it's really lamentable."

The president said earlier that the areas of San Marcos, Solola and Quetzaltenango had been the hardest hit, along with Guatemala, home to Guatemala City, where some residents and office workers ran into the streets during an extended bout of strong shaking.

Perez said that homes and schools had been destroyed in numerous parts of the country and that the damage was still being assessed.

"The preliminary details that we can mention is that we have 100 people who have disappeared, and the other detail that is preliminary is that we have about 15 people who are buried, with the necessary rescues being performed," he said.

Local media noted that the western city of San Pedro Sacatepequez was hit particularly hard, with dozens of homes destroyed and communication hampered by downed telephone lines and power outages.

The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Mexico and El Salvador. As in the Guatemalan capital, many workers in Mexico City poured out of office buildings onto the city's main artery, the Paseo de la Reforma, though by the afternoon, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard had declared that the city had escaped harm.

The U.S.-run Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that a tsunami had been generated by the quake. The report had scant details but said the tsunami "may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter."

@Butrflynet,

(Reuters) - A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala killed at least 48 people and trapped others under rubble on Wednesday, crushing homes and cars, destroying roads and forcing evacuations as far away as Mexico City.

Most of the dead were buried under debris in San Marcos state, a mountainous region near the Mexican border. Landslides triggered by the 7.4 magnitude quake blocked highways and complicated rescue efforts.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Central American nation since 1976, when a 7.5 magnitude quake killed more than 20,000 people.
...

Television footage showed collapsed buildings and vehicles crushed under rocks and stuck in large cracks in highways.

In San Cristobal Cucho, in San Marcos state, all but one of an 11-member family died, buried under rubble, volunteer fireman Ovidio Fuentes told local radio. Only the 17-year-old son survived.

Local Red Cross chief Carlos Enrique Alvarado said 75 homes were destroyed in the city of San Marcos alone and authorities said damage to the prison forced them to transfer 101 inmates to another jail.

Perez said Spain and Venezuela had offered help. Authorities distributed 16,000 emergency rations and mobilized more than 2,000 soldiers to help with the rescue effort. The energy ministry said 73,000 people were left without electricity.

Alaska Gets All Clear After Quake and Tsunami Alert
By GERRY MULLANY
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A powerful earthquake early Saturday set off a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of Alaskan and Canadian coastline, but the alert was canceled after no damaging waves were generated.

The magnitude-7.5 quake and the tsunami warning caused concern in some coastal communities, with people rushing to higher ground as alarms sounded.

But the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center later said the waves were too small to pose a threat, at just six inches above normal sea level in places like Sitka and Port Alexander.

“Initially, in the first 15 to 20 minutes, there might have been a bit of panic,” Chief Sheldon Schmitt of the Sitka Police Department said. Residents calmed down, he said, as the town waited for the all clear.

The temblor struck around midnight local time and was centered about 60 miles west of Craig, the United States Geological Survey said.

Jana Pursley, a seismologist with the agency, said the quake was followed by six aftershocks, the strongest of which registered at magnitude 5.1 and came nearly four hours later.

“Houses shook,” said Chief Robert Ely of the Craig Police Department. “Mine had things tossed from the wall.”

But, he added, there were “no reports of any injuries, no wave, no tidal movement seen.”

The initial tsunami warning had been expanded to include coastal areas from Cape Fairweather, Alaska, to the northern tip of Vancouver Island, Canada — an area extending more than 700 miles.

The warning center had said that “significant widespread inundation of land is expected,” adding that dangerous coastal flooding was possible.

In its cancellation statement, the center said some areas were seeing just small changes in sea level.

“A tsunami was generated during this event but no longer poses a threat,” the center said.

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said that the quake had been widely felt, but that there were no reports of any damage.

“It was the most intense earthquake I’ve felt in my 10 years here — I’m pretty sure there was stuff falling off of shelves,” Chief Schmitt said. “There is no report of any wave activity here.”

Chief Schmitt said evacuation sirens and announcements in Sitka came shortly after the quake, prompting the temporary rush by residents to higher ground.

Some people in Craig also moved to safer territory.

“Several citizens elected on their own to move to higher ground,” Chief Ely said. Several sites had been set up for staging and shelter, he said, although no evacuation was ordered.

In addition to the warning, a tsunami advisory was briefly in effect for some coastal areas north and south of the warning zone, including a stretch from the Washington State border to the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

@Butrflynet,
USGS report on the quake:

Tectonic Summary

The January 5, 2013 M 7.5 earthquake off the west coast of southeastern Alaska occurred as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is moving approximately northwestward with respect to the North America plate at a velocity of 51 mm/yr.

This earthquake is likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of Alaska and British Columbia, Canada, which forms the major expression of the Pacific:North America plate boundary in this region. The surrounding area of the plate boundary has hosted 8 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past 40 years; In 1949, a M 8.1 earthquake occurred close to the Pacific:North America plate boundary approximately 230 km to the south east of the January 5 earthquake, as a result of strike-slip faulting. In October of 2012, a M 7.8 earthquake occurred approximately 330 km to the south east of the January 5 event, slightly inboard of the plate boundary, and was associated with oblique-thrust faulting. The latter earthquake was likely an expression of the oblique component of deformation along this plate boundary system. The January 5, 2013 earthquake is related to that Haida Gwai earthquake three months previously, and is an expression of deformation along the same plate boundary system.

The January 5 event broke a fault approximately 50 km in length, and slipped 7-8 m. Aftershocks of the earthquake can be seen here.

Interesting timing and locations for these quakes. Wonder if the passing asteroid in the southern hemisphere had the same kind of gravitational influence that scientists think the moon has on some earthquake occurrences.
