A POWERFUL 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the Sea of Okhotsk off the east Russian coast early today, US and Japanese monitors said, with the tremor felt as far away as Tokyo.

The quake occurred at 1259 AEST some 158km east of Poronaysk, Russia, with the epicenter a comparatively deep 625km down, the US Geological Survey said in an initial report.

Japan's Meteorological agency said the tremor was felt throughout the country's northern island of Hokkaido, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a first and final bulletin that a destructive tsunami was not expected.

The earthquake caused a jolt in the Japanese capital Tokyo, AFP journalists said. The area around Japan is regularly hit by powerful quakes and is the site of the convergence of several of the Earth's tectonic plates.

@Butrflynet,
Here's the scientific report from the geologists on the 7.7 quake...

Quote:
Earthquake Summary

Tectonic Summary

The August 13, 2012 M 7.7 earthquake near Poronaysk, Russia occurred as a result of oblique-reverse faulting deep within the subducting Pacific plate beneath the Sea of Okhotsk, offshore of northeast Russia. The earthquake ruptured a fault in the interior of the inclined subduction zone that dips to the west-northwest beneath the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka, having begun its decent into the mantle at the Kuril-Kamchatka trench. The event resulted from stresses generated by the slow distortion of the subducting plate as it descends through the mantle, rather than on the thrust interface the constitutes the boundary between the Pacific and overlying North America plates; the latter is active only near the Earth's surface, while the subducting Pacific plate is active to depths of over 650 km in this region. At the latitude of the August 13 earthquake, the Pacific plate moves approximately 81 mm/yr towards the west-northwest with respect to the North America plate. The plate boundary here is sometimes divided into several microplates that together define the relative motions between the larger Pacific, North America and Eurasia plates, including the Okhotsk and Amur microplates that are respectively part of North America and Eurasia. Deep earthquakes in this region of the Pacific plate are not uncommon; there have been 10 similar events deeper than 450 km over the past 450 years, within 300 km of the August 13 2012 earthquake. The largest was a M 7.3 event in November of 2003, approximately 230 km to the south-southeast. Earthquakes that have focal depths greater than 300 km are commonly termed "deep-focus" earthquakes. Deep-focus earthquakes cause less damage on the ground surface above their foci than is the case with similar magnitude shallow-focus earthquakes, but large deep-focus earthquakes may be felt at great distance from their epicenters. The largest recorded deep-focus earthquake had a magnitude of 8.2, and occurred deep beneath Bolivia in 1994.

Earthquake swarm damages buildings in downtown Brawley
August 26, 2012 | 2:08 pm

A handful of buildings in downtown Brawley had minor damage after an earthquake swarm rattled the area Sunday, officials said.

Capt. Jesse Zendejas of the Brawley Fire Department described the damage as "cosmetic" and said it occurred in at least three buildings dating to the 1930s. Crews were still assessing other areas of the city, he said, but no injuries had been reported.

Imperial County firefighters were also assisting in the survey.

The first quake — a magnitude 3.8 temblor — occurred at 10:02 a.m. about three miles northwest of Brawley, and was followed by a series of other quakes in the same general area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The largest was a magnitude 5.3 -- downgraded from a 5.4 -- that struck just after 12:30 p.m., but the numbers may be revised.

The USGS' "Do You Feel It" system shows the quakes were felt as far away as San Diego, Temecula and San Clemente. The 5.3 quake was also felt in Moreno Valley, Indio, National City and Palm Desert.

Thomas Jordan, director of the USC-based Southern California Earthquake Center, called the activity a "very active swarm" — something not unusual for the southern edge of the San Andreas Fault, which has seen similar occurrences in recent years.

This swarm could continue to rumble the region for a few days, Jordan added.

"It's been pretty productive so far," he said. "It's a vigorous one. We got some pretty good-sized events."

As data continued to roll in, Jordan said, scientists would study to swarm to learn how the sequence developed and what impact it could have on the fault.

"We're always concerned where there is significant seismic activity because that means there is a higher probability of having more seismic activity," he said.

Earthquake swarm near Brawley overwhelms USGS seismographs
Seismologist: 'What we're seeing is a classic Brawley seismic swarm'
2:17 PM, Aug 26, 2012

A series of small earthquakes expanded into a rash of moderate quakes at the south end of the Salton Sea today, and the largest quakes were felt from Orange County and San Diego east into Arizona.

‘‘What we’re seeing is a classic Brawley seismic swarm,’’ USGS seismologist Lucy Jones told City News Service. ‘‘We haven’t seen one of these since the 1970s, and there was another one back in the 1930s.’’

Some buildings were evacuated in Brawley, a small farm town 115 miles east-northeast of San Diego. ‘‘It’s pretty bad, we had to evacuate the hotel just for safety,’’ said Rowena Rapoza, office manager at the Best Western Hotel there.

Jones said USGS seismographs and analysis computers were overwhelmed by the rash of rattling that began at sunrise, and reached a crescendo with a magnitude 5.3 quake just after 12:30 p.m. It was followed by a 4.9 shaker within two minutes.

‘‘Our system is choking on so many earthquakes,’’ Jones said. ‘‘This area of California is deep soils, and we do not get as precise data as we do over the rest of the state, and that makes our data a little less precise.’’

Preliminary computerized USGS reports had indicated that three quakes larger than magnitude 5.3 had rattled out from Brawley at 12:30. That was later resolved by seismologists to two quakes, magnitude 5.3 and 4.9, Jones told CNS.

The quakes were strongly felt at Borrego Springs, in San Diego County about 25 miles west of the epicenter. ‘‘We’ve felt shaking for sure, but electricity has not gone out,’’ said Gwenn Marie, owner of the Borrego Valley Inn.

The quakes were felt over all of San Diego, Riverside and Imperial counties, and in Yuma and La Paz counties in Arizona, according to a USGS registry.

The ground about 5 miles north-northwest of Brawley began to spasm at sunrise, and Brawley was rocked by a magnitude 3.9 quake at 10:02 a.m., followed by a 3.4 quake about 90 seconds later.

In the three hours after the first earthquakes, an additional 11 quakes struck the same approximate epicenter near the Salton Sea. Quakes with magnitudes of 4.0, 4.0. 4.6 and 4.7 reportedly also hit during the noon hour.

The apparent quake cluster was centered 3 miles north-northwest of Brawley, 16 miles north of El Centro and about 115 miles east-northeast of San Diego. Some of the quakes were also just east of Brawley.

Jones said the quake swarm was about midway between fault complex on the west side of the Imperial Valley, and the main branch of the San Andreas Fault, which runs from near Palm Springs to enter Mexico just west of Yuma.

‘‘These don’t seem to be related to earthquakes on the San Andreas itself, other than in a general way,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s pretty far away.’’

Jones says she expected the quake swarm ‘‘to continue to bubble along, they’re going to get a bunch of 4s and 5s.’’

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits El Salvador; tsunami warning issued
August 26, 2012 | 10:42 pm

California is not included in a tsunami warning issued Sunday night after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast of El Salvador.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the warning for parts of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico. But it did not extend to the United States.

The temblor struck at 9:37 p.m. about 69 miles off shore. The epicenter was about 105 miles southwest of San Salvador.

There were no reports of casualties or damage.

The quake comes after a swarm of more than 300 quakes Sunday in Imperial County, including at least two greater than 5.0 magnitude. Those temblors caused minor damage and forced evacuations from some buildings.

Brawley earthquake swarm causes evacuations
August 26, 2012 | 10:12 pm

Late in the evening Sunday, after hours of low-intensity earthquakes striking near Brawley as part of an "earthquake swarm," the U.S. Geological Survey reported a series of stronger temblors, with a 4.9 magnitude quake striking at 9:41, followed by others measuring 3.4 and 3.7.

A number of families were displaced and hospital patients evacuated as a result of a swarm of hundreds of earthquakes earlier in the day.

No deaths or critical injuries were reported as a result of the quakes, the largest of which measured magnitudes 5.3 and 5.5.

Some buildings were damaged by the earlier quakes, including 20 mobile homes that shifted from their foundations, according to the Imperial County Office of Emergency Services. The office was working with the American Red Cross to set up a shelter for displaced families at the Imperial Valley College gymnasium.

The quakes cause scattered power outages, including at Pioneers Memorial Hospital, which lost power for about three hours. Assistant hospital administrator Art Mejia said generators immediately kicked in, but officials decided to evacuate patients as a precautionary measure in case the facility had suffered structural damage.

"We decided to err on the side of caution," he said.

Patients in critical condition were transferred to other hospitals in the area or in San Diego and Riverside counties, while others were either discharged or moved across the street to a medical office building.

Mejia said Sunday evening that hospital staff and state regulators were walking through the hospital to assess the damages, but so far, the damages appeared superficial, including fallen ceiling tiles.

He said they hoped to be able to return patients to the hospital in a matter of hours.

Officials were urging residents to conserve water Sunday, and some schools were planning to close Monday, including Brawley Union High School, schools in the Brawley Elementary School District, Del Rio Community School and Mulberry Elementary.

County officials said updates would be posted on the Imperial County Emergency Medical Services Agency and the Imperial County Public Health Department's Facebook pages, and residents with questions about issues like school closures and water issues may call 760-351-2686.

Major quake hits off Philippines; tsunami alert canceled

11:51am EDT
By Rosemarie Francisco
MANILA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday damaging roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, a politician and authorities said.

The quake was centered off the east coast, 91 miles off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for much of the region, but canceled it about two hours later.

However, Philippine authorities maintained their tsunami warning after ordering residents to get out of coastal areas immediately.
"We are in a wait and see situation, some bridges and roads were damaged and people panicked and are now on higher ground," Samar congressman, Ben Evardone, told local radio.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, said the head of the national disaster agency, Benito Ramos.

Large parts of Samar and Leyte province had no power or internet connections.

"The only lights you see are from vehicles in the streets headed to higher ground," said a radio reporter in the town of Borongan.
The tsunami warning was initially issued for the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific including the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Small waves of about 16 cm (6 inches) had hit a southern Philippine island, the seismology agency said, and warned that bigger ones could follow.

Renato Solidum, head of the agency, said residents should get to a 10-metre elevation until the tsunami alert was lifted.
The region has been hit by two huge quakes in the past decade. At least 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries were killed in a quake and tsunami off Indonesia in 2004.

Last year, an earthquake and tsunami off Japan's northeastern coast killed about 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years after waves battered a nuclear power station.

Powerful quake hits Costa Rica, tsunami warning issued
11:42am EDT
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Costa Rica on Wednesday, rattling buildings and cutting power in some areas of the capital.

Residents of San Jose said phones went down, electricity poles rattled and water flowed out of pools during the quake.

"It was terrible. I was on the third floor, I had never felt anything like it," said Stephanie Gonzalez, a 25-year-old masters student.

The quake's epicenter was in western Costa Rica about 87 miles from San Jose, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, and it was felt as far away as Managua, the capital of neighboring Nicaragua.

"It was very strong, everyone is getting out because of the tsunami alert," said a worker at the Samara Tree House Inn on Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Pacific coastlines of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. It had earlier warned of tsunamis for as far away as Mexico and Chile.

It was the biggest earthquake in Costa Rica since a 7.6 quake in 1991 left 47 dead. More recently, 40 died in a 6.1 magnitude quake in January 2009.
