I wrote this poem about the city I live in the city I both love and hate, if you never been to it (Johannesburg SOuth Africa) then maybe this poem can help you imagine what it's like. Jozi is slang for johannesburg. Observatory is a suburb in Jo'burg, once very exclusice now a victim of Urban creep, Linksfield is a very exclusive rich suburb while Orange Gove is poorer suburb.
JOZI HEIGHTS
Grey dove soft clouds
wash the blue sky
an ocean flecked with silvertone foam.
Tranquil late Jozi afternoon
above an empty white Observatory Mansion
cleaner and brighter against the charcoal sky
Drops thick with purpose
run down the Winding Linksfiled Ridge roads
carrying bottle tops and Joint stubs
and last night's memories downhill
past the millionaire's steep slick driveways
to the bottom, to Orange Grove
Where young men and women battle
up wet steep roads
in old dented cars
the most popular colour white
White wet Mazda's, toyota's and volkswagens
they all glow in this dark brooding afternoon
luminous with drive
shining as they pass the more expensive homes.
I really like this as it is so different from where I live in England. Mostly grey skies and rain and when the sun shines there are grumbles that it is too hot. Greydove soft clouds sounds beautiful .Maggie
