Ever wondered what space smells like? Fried steak and hot metal say scientists
Quote:Outer space smells like fried steak, hot metal and welding a motorbike, scientists said today.
Nasa has commissioned Steven Pearce, a chemist and managing director of fragrance manufacturing company Omega Ingredients, to recreate the smell of space in a laboratory.
His research will be used to help astronauts prepare for the conditions they will encounter in space.
@Reyn,
In space, no one can hear you ... (fill in here) ...
PS How would they know and how would it be possible? Doesn't sniffing involve actual breathing?
@jespah,
Yeah...and isn't space REALLY low on molecules?
I suspect they speak of what space CAPSULES smell like.
@dlowan,
That's a lot more likely to be right.
They could open a vile and then put the top back on while they are out on one of their space walks, and then bring it back inside the space station, open it and smell.
Otherwise, I think it would be pretty hard to do. Even when the one guy last year or so that was out repairing something on the space station got a tear on the sleeve of his space suit he had to get inside really quick.
If it is as stated, I don't think I would douse myself in "Space" before a date.
