Are there any significant predators to man on the river? I suppose there's probably a disease or two but I'm talking about the four legged or scaly type predator. I'm thinking of taking a small boat from Minneapolis to New Orleans. I've never heard of this being done but you'd think it would one of the great outdoor adventures in the US.
Read "Old Glory", a book by Johnathan Raban.
He did that, a small boat trip down the Mississip, and that book is a great read.
Let us know how you get on.

There is the giant Mississippi Catfish, some are as large as 300 pounds, which, if you have the misfortune of being impaled by a large weighed hook and thrown overboard, may nuzzle you on the muddy bottom before moving on to something tastier.

PS When do you set sail or um, start your engine?
Here's another chat board discussing the subject, dov:

 I am really old now (50) so I may be fooling myself if I try to go down the river manually. I suppose it would be easier to go down motorized but won't I run into trouble once or twice by the River Gestapo, otherwise known as the Army Corps of Engineers or the Coast Guard. Call me cynical but I'm sure there will be someone to make my life difficult. Fees, requirements, that sort of foolishness. I may be wrong.....
There is a guy, or maybe even a group, who has canoed the length of the Mississippi at least once. I think this is them

I think man would give you more trouble than any predator. Good luck!
