Volume Control Problem

I'm having a problem with the volume control. When my computer is on the sound is OK. But when I turn my computer off then back on later the control button is all the way down and I can't get any sound from my speakers. Any ideas about why this is happening? It's been going on for about three days! Thanks for any help!
