Post-it Notes

For once I don't have a question, a problem, or a difficulty! What I do have is a neat little bit of software for those of us who are not (ahem) perhaps as organized as they might be.

The October issue of PC World (p105) has a short paragraph about 3M's latest contribution to civilized society - an electronic version of the Post-it Note. A year or so ago there was an article, also in PW World, describing how to set up a version of Post-its by juggling stuff on your own computer, but I couldn't make it work, although I though I followed the instructions perfectly - my bad, I guess.

Anyway, go to www.3M.com/psnotes and you can download the Lite version for free. You can get pretty sophisticated with the subscription versions, but this one seems to fit my needs very well.

A nice bright yellow Post-it, right there on your desktop is a fine in-your-face reminder (some might call it a nag...) and although I just downloaded it this morning, I've already found it handy.

Of course - maybe everyone knows about this and I'm the last one on the bus - so what; it's a useful little thing and I'm right pleased with it. Very Happy

I used to use them but got tired of 'em.

There is a similar feature in Outlook but the post-it program is a bit better.

Thanks Tomkitten. I almost always learn something from your posts. I marked this on to examine at work tomorrow. It's something I've actually been wanting.

Post-it Notes
ye110man -

I don't use Outlook, but the notes stay on my desktop when I'm not on the Internet. They did also appear when I went online, but I got rid of them there (I have no idea how to get them to appear when I'm online now, but they have a good Help feature - I just haven't bothered).

I'm not on highspeed access, just pokey phone modem, so most of the time my computer just shows its regular desktop anyway, and the notes can be as large an prominent as you like, or minimized to little more than a big dot. Why they should remain on my desktop, but close when you close Outlook, I've no idea. Confused

I suggest checking out their FAQ; you may find out how to keep them from closing.

yellowman,

Outlook's notes only work while Outlook is running.

same with post it but post it can run in the background and post it can put them on the desktop of on "bulletin boards" etc.

This means that Post It data is not stored on my own computer? If so, that's still a lesser insanity than an online accounting program, but not something I want.

I used to have the full version that worked on a win95 machine. Now I use Outlook on the Pocket PC.

No, the data is stored on your computer, the buletin boards are just ways the software groups the notes.

Just now download it, Tomkitten. Do you know of any way to get that little yellow thing off the screen and into a toolbar where it belongs?

A real, paper, post-it note on the monitor.

Works. Even when the computer is off.

Post it notes
I really don't know how I did it, but a little tiny yellow Post-It icon is on my task bar. Nothing happens when I click on it, but just above the taskbar, on the right, is the functioning icon. It's not on but sits immediately above it.

I have the basic version; perhaps the more advanced one puts the icon right on the bar. . .

My desk too, Heliotrope, and the edges of the monitor too. Now there is one discretely plastered in the upper right corner of the screen itself.

Craven never hugged a Russian olive tree, or he wouldn't say that. Neither has anyone else - at least not twice.
