William Allen White, for those who don't know, was very famous in the first decades of the 1900's. He was Editor of the Emporia (KS) Gazette but his political observations were highly influential. Among other things, he persuaded the US Gov't to back Britain and start the Lend/Lease program in the early years of WWII. My mother was (ahem) his Society Editor for a brief time in the '40's.
