Alley Oop's name was most likely derived from the French phrase allez, hop!. In the 1933 press release that accompanied the launching of the strip with its new distributor NEA, Hamlin was quoted as saying "I really can't recall just how I struck upon the name 'Alley Oop', although it might be from the fact that the name is a French term used by tumblers. Alley Oop really is a roughhouse tumbler." The name of Alley's girlfriend, Ooola, was a play on a different French phrase, "Ooo-la-la."

Alley Oop was created in 1932 as a syndicated comic by cartoonist V.T. Hamlin. The character’s name was taken from a phrase allegedly used by French gymnasts and means “let’s go."

In defense of Alley Oop, I have to say I have been a lifelong fan of the strip. V T Hamlin, the originator was a historian. He knew that cavemen and Dinosaurs were not contemporaries; it was a what if? with a bit of comedy added. After Dr Wonmug was introduced with his time machine, Oop went through much of human history, altering it for his adventures, but only someone aware of history could have done the things he did. He was with the correct group of people when they built the Sphinx, for instance. His addition to the story: The Sphinx originally had Oop's face before the nose fell off. Since Hamlin left it the strip has deteriorated more with each new artist to reach its present state of allowing the characters to look incredibly stupid for a pun.
