@hingehead,
Our former pm Whitlam paid just over $1 million in 1973 for this piece of rag called Blue Poles and "painted???" by Pollock, now hanging in our National Gallery in Canberra. A wonder GG. Kerr didn't sack him then. Rolling Eyes

@Dutchy,
I've been to Peggy Guggenheim's house in Venice, in a room full of Jackson Pollocks. Amazing. I guess if you don't get it, you don't get it.

Fact is, Blue Poles value has appreciated significantly - it was a wise investment decision, helped put the ANG on the international map as a serious gallery and able to attract some great traveling exhibits, like the surrealists back in the early 1990s, my first Dali in the flesh! And the seemingly endless blockbusters from Monet to Manet since.

Late addition - Blue Poles is estimated to be worth around $150 million.

@hingehead,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess and opinions differ. Much more prefer the Old Masters which I've admired in a number of galleries in Europe.

@Dutchy,
Definitely a personal pref thing. I was more sticking up for the decision to buy it then its worth as an object d'art. And for a chance to name drop Venice!. Did you think the Mona Lisa was tiny, and a little disappointing after the queue at the Louvre?

@hingehead,
My visit to the Louvre was during a school excursion many moons ago and to be honest I don't remember to many details about it.
