In the past there was a big commotion over whether Van or Von was acceptable. I don't know what was decided, but there are times when this thread paints itself into a corner and the only way to get out is by using Van or Von. However, if Miss or Mister was acceptable then that would sort of destroy the game.

No doubt you'd feel the same about the name Doctor. But that doesn't stop it from being an actual name.

If it's the name that's one thing that's acceptable, but if it's a title then it doesn't work.

I really like this thread. It was inactive for about 4 months and it just wasn't visible anymore, and then I stumbled upon it one day and revived it.

And then there's catch-22. One character played by Bob Newhart in the movie had the name of Captain Major. And then he got promoted to Major so his name was Major Major. Actually his full name was Major Major Major Major. So all three Majors would be acceptable except for the first one.
