I have a laptop that has WMP 10 on it. Whenever I receive .wmv files and try to play them on that machine, I get a message like "Cannot play the file, may not have the required coded installed" or something to that effect.

I reinstalled WMP 10, and several codec packages. Still the same.

My other laptop has WMP 10 and it works fine. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's asking for a codec, and not a license?

If it's a codec issue, try the K-Lite Codec Pack.

That's the one I installed, at least I think I installed it. The procedure wasn't very straightforward (it asked a lot of questions I had no answer for).

Did you reboot your computer afterwards?

Well given the holes in information (whether they are playable files at all, whether you installed the codec, and what the error message really says) I can't help you.

They work if I simply use the other laptop, so yes they are playable. I did install the codec - I think. Not sure if I installed it correctly because of the unclear procedure.

I'm sorry but I don't have the entire message right now.

I just configured the Media Player Classic that comes with k-lite to play all the file types. I tried to open an wmv - it says "Cannot render the file".

???

OK, now I'm really confused. It seems that almost any attachment won't open on that machine. I'm using ATT/Yahoo webmail, and any .wmv or even .pps won't open. The same mail opens fine on my other laptop.

Maybe it's my anti-virus software (Norton)?

When in doubt, use VLC.
