I can boot into windows only if I turn off 2 of my 3 scsi tape devices.

Three tape devices? And I thought I was paranoid.

Anyhoo, verify that all SCSI devices have a unique ID, all cables are well connected, and that the SCSI chain is terminated.

u can never be too safe ay !

all cables seem to be connected ok and the chain is definately terminated. Here is my setup -

scsi card to main dlt drive
main dlt drive to 2nd dlt drive
2nd dlt to 3rd dat drive.

termination

this was all working a few days ago then i noticed I/0 errors and failed backups on the main dlt drive. So to test i changed the cables around from dlt 1 and dlt 2 and now i've put it back coz there was no difference the machine won't boot and just says -

ch b, SCSI ID:1
and the only way I can boot into windows is to turn off just dlt 1. but this makes all devices unusable and offline.
I went to scsi bios and saw just 1 device which was the main dlt drive think this must be coz of the way they are connected?
how do I check to see if they have unique ID's.

Cheers alot

External devices usually have a number that you can change by pressing a button - either up or down.

Try removing DLT1 completely. Can you boot and see DLT2 and DAT1?

I assume the SCSI card is PCI, and if so I would start by pulling the SCSI card. If everything is fine, I would install the SCSI card, if everything is fine I would then install one SCSI device, and so on.........

It's a simple process of elimination, and of course you could start with pulling the SCSI devices and leaving the SCSI PCI card installed.

have now tryed connecting with just the dlt 1 and the just dlt 2, this didn't change anything. found where to change the unique id's as well so thanks. the only thingh that I cannot change is the SCSI cable from SCSI card to device DLT1. when looking at the pins notice 1 of the corner pins was in half or had been pushed downloads ? which one i'm not sure maybe I could get some tweezers on it. anyway think SCSI is renound for having temperamental cables. so will ahve to buy another one to check.

how does this sound am I making any sense ?

nice one

Yup. Bent pins will definitely do you in.

the pin isn't bent just is half as long as the other pins................was wondering if it had been snapped off or pushed inside a bit ???

hey people !!

right......got the new scsi cable and this has rectified the original problem......but has gained me two fresh ones........swear i'll be an expert after this episode!

1. my DAT device has its unique ID set to 3 which is fine but when i look in backup exec it shows port number 4 and id number 3......this port number should be 3 as well like my other devices.....how do i change this?

2. DLT 2 is backing up fine. Dlt 1 just sticks on loading media ? ? obvioulsly the DAT drive is not doing much coz the port number is wrong.

Cheers for any help I know this is a difficult one.
