If you don't know how to open the registry editor, it's not a wise move to go there.

The smallest thing you do can corrupt your system..

Listen to Francis and note the warnings on that site. You will be doing this at your own risk.

It's easy to open the registry.

It's a lot harder to fix your mistakes
(As Francis already pointed out.)

Just run "regedit" to open the registry editor.

It can be done but you should read up on how to fix the problem of a corrupt registry before you touch it.

back up the registry.
know how to restore it using a recovery disk
make sure you have a recovery disk.
Practice restoring the registry before you mess with it so when the inevitable happens you can repair it.

There is a lot of information out there about how to adjust your registry. And a lot of reasons you might need or want to but its best to know the consequences and how to fix it.

I would not futz around with the registry myself, but I have a program that does it for me.

http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/

The first time that I used it, I was shocked about how many errors that the program found (and fixed). Now I use it around once a week, and every time that I either add or delete a program, and there is usually something to fix.
