Turkey in the Straw

Feller living across the street from the apartments has a problem. One of his turkeys is nesting in our pampas grass. He called me out and led me to it. All I could see in the grass was a bit of black feathers and two eggs protruding from beneath it. He was worried the ground crew might weed eat the bird, which I assured him I would not let happen. He said he could incubate the eggs, but, for a reason he can't figure, all the turkeys he has incubated have died at a young age. He suspects maybe something the mother does for them in the first days activates the immune system. So, I think he has concluded he will move her.

Some years back, the same feller owned a great white turkey. I reminded him of it mentioning that is had gotten a habit of chasing the mail carrier's truck every day. He told me that turkey lived about 15years.

Knew a turkey named Millie. She had great sad eyes of brown. Oh she could cut a rug, scratching that hay. Jitterbug. Charleston. She did a pigeon-toed waltz. Neath the harvest moon we spooned. I sure hated having to butcher her, come that Thanksgiving.

The only bird, besides the pheasant, to have a country named after it.

Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day

When dressing your turkey, make sure you know the dress code; dress codes are protected by law!

I won't eat any of those freaky Dolly Parton breasted white turkeys wrapped in plastic, pumped with brine and frozen like a wooly mammoth. I like a nice heirloom bird raised in a clean yard with plenty of grain for pecking. This is a Bourbon Red, a noble and rare turkey to be respected and admired and eaten if a special occasion arises:

I don't think your friend should mess with nest. Turkeys are sensitive about such things. He might disrupt her security and she will abandon the eggs. Is it in a place where everyone can just leave it alone?
