Hey Friends,

I have some Steve Miller Puzzles and need help on these two.

Can you guys help me out. Thx [Smile]

1. You have two pieces of string each burns in one hour but they burn
irregularlly in terms of how many inches burn per minute anywhere along the string, can you use the strings to time 45 minutes????

2. A warden in a prison decides to give a certain prisoner a chance at
freedom. The warden brings the prinsoner to the two doors with picture signs of gold and tiger each and explains that, behind the doors, no room is empty. If gold is behind the door that the prisoner chooses, he/she gets to keep it, as well as gets to go free. But, if the prisoner chooses a door with a tiger behind it, the tiger will have its dinner for the night. The warden tells the prisoner that either both signs are true or both are false. If you were the prisoner, which door would you choose to get the gold and obtain your freedom? Explain why.

1. Yes.

Light one string at each end. Light one fuse at one end.

When the first string is gone, you will have 30 minutes of string on the other.

Light the other end of the string.

When the string is gone, 45 minutes will have elapsed.

I came up with the same answer you did (I think), but I worded it different and was already working on the problem when you posted. So, I am going to post my answer anyway.

Take string #1 and light it on both ends.
Take string #2 and light it from just one end.
Light string #1 and string #2 at the same time.

String #1 will take 30 minutes to burn.
When string #1 is gone then light the other side of string #2.
String #2 will take 15 minutes to burn.

The total burn time will be 45 minutes.

Step 1: Open door.

Step 2: If tiger is discovered, insert warden.

I think you can handle the rest from there Razz

the riddle is poorly worded
1. If each (individual) segment of string burns in one hour (totaling two hours), you would need to burn one string at both ends signifying a half hour.

Now assuming the other string is identical - light the string at three points (with one point at the area of the string the fires finished on its counterpart).

That will be 45 minutes (assuming the strings are identical).

2. The tigers are wearing gold
