Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a famous political figure in the history of India. He is known to the Chinese as Sheng Xiong Gan Di, or Holy Hero Gandhi.
I'd like to know how Gandhi was respectfully addressed in the official language of India and in English as well.
In English, he is usually referred to as Mahatma Ghandi. Mahatma is a title of respect in Hinduism meaning someone who is high-minded and spiritual. I suspect that the same is true for the Indians--but i'm not Indian, and can't speak for them.
Gandhiji in Hindi (almost always)
Mahatma Gandhi in English (on first reference; usually "Gandhi" on subsequent references)
