My in laws have a large amount of land they want to sell, but they have never had bit appraised. There must be a company that can come out, evaluate the land, let us know its best uses, and how much we should ask. Maybe even how to contact the people who might be interested. What type of company handles something like this?
Appraisers abound in most areas, though many may not be up to date on raw land values. If you're dealing with real estate brokers, take their input, but sometimes they seem to prefer a quick sale rather than hold out for top dollar.
You might check realtor.com for your area to see what others are asking in the area.
Any real estate agency can take care of the particulars for them. A certified appraisal will run a few hundred dollars but an agent should be able to give them a rough number in a matter of minutes.
btw, your folks can find a quick list of possible uses by visiting their local town or county zoning office and finding out what type of uses the land is zoned for - assuming they are in the U.S. of course. Not sure what other countries might do... Any use other than the current zoning would require a zoning waiver (which can be gotten but sometimes it isn't easy).
