Ankle Injury

Yesterday at rugby training I was jogging when I went onto uneven ground, rolled my ankle, all my weight went on it, I heard a massive crack then my ankle swelled up to the size of a tennis ball. I went to hospital, they did X rays on it and they told me it wasnt broken but either a sprain or torn ligements and that I would have to do physio etc. I found this funny as the coachs all thought it was broken and they all have degrees in sports ed, the nurses thought it was broken and so did some doctors ( they thought this just from looking at it, not at the x rays) so anyway they put it in a bandage and I came home with walking sticks. I decided to look on the internet to see what was happening to me and see if there was anything I could do to make my recovery faster when I came across this website:

http://www.emedx.com/emedx/diagnosis_information/foot-ankle_disorders/fibular_fracture_surgery.htm

If you look at this site you can see a normal ankle xray and a fractured one, the difference I see is very very small and the Dr who heped me wasnt in the best mood or helpful at all.

What Im asking you guys is there anyway he could have missed the break and is there anyway I can see for myself if its broken? I once heard if i cant move my toes my ankle is broken, is this true? ( I can move my toes)

Any advice would be helpful

Extra info:
I have had problems with my ankle before but nothing broken
I cant walk it, even for it to touch the ground hurts like hell

Damn right he could have missed it.
Get another opinion ASAP.
Yes, you can move your toes even if your ankle's broken.

Hey DartBoy

Definitely get a second opinion. As soon as. Try not to mobilise the ankle until another doctor has confirmed there isn't a break.

Let us know how you go hunni.

Torn ligaments take longer to heal than fractures do. Be prepared for a good stretch of limited mobility.

Thanks for the help guys, my brother rang the hospital for me and they said that all X-Rays are rechecked by an expert and they would get in touch with us =.= also the doctor said that it was likely that i had a 3rd degree sprain, that I dislocated my ankle and tore the ligiments and also tore my tendon, that sucks after all the fitness training I put into pre season before rugby.

One more question, can you help me with excercises I can do which doesnt involve walking or my foot etc which can keep my fitness up but most of all my weight down? I lost 12 kilos and I really dont want to put it back on, any ideas?

First off, I'm glad they're rechecking your xrays. Feel better soon.

As for exercises, swimming comes to mind, as does weight training for the upper body only.

They didnt get back to me so I guess it was checked and it wasnt broken but what im worried abotu is that I had 4 days rest, having my foot up etc, went back to school with crucths, had my foot towards the ground most of the day then that night(last night) when I was resting I went to get up and as soon as my foot pointed down and blood rushed to it massive pain would overcome me and id have to sit down and get my foot up, today I couldnt go to school cuz the same thing happened,I had to have stay on the couch all day, even going to thebathroom is a huge problem, anyone know whats up with this?

I've sprained both of my ankles quite a bit playing soccer over the years.

If it's a serious sprain, you may be on crutches for a month. Then, on an air cast or walking boot. Keep your ankle elevated, even when you sleep.

At the end of that period, you will need to go easy on it, obviously, for some time. You may notice your ankle will be quite swollen. You will need to gradually increase the flexibility of your Achilles tendon, as you rehab. The key to this is to do a runner's stretch for about 10 seconds, but do it many times through the day. This stretching will decrease the swelling.

So much better thank you, I'm able to walk again which is awesome, I find myself just walking around the block because I can, being inside all day drove me nuts. What ended up happening was that i got phyiso everyday for 2 weeks which worked like wonders, Im able to get back into lite sports now which is also an up but other sports like squash, soccer, rugby and badmintin will have to wait a long long long while which is a huge bummer as this is my last year at school. Thanks for asking again, it was really nice of you and has made me feel even better
