So I did something. Click here and click there and it was gone from my desktop.... but not really.
It doesn't show up on the desktop, yet when I open the desktop folder, there it is. How do I convince the recycle bin to show again? Cut and paste doesn't work, copy and paste only results in a shortcut to recycle bin.
I have windows vista if that makes any difference.
Vista definitely matters, but it may be similar enough to XP:
Right-click the desktop and select personalize.
Click Change Desktop Icons.
Choose your icons and click OK.

in XP:
right-click desktop > properties
desktop tab > customize desktop > change icon
