Can Sunnis and Shiites tell which sect a person is a member of, based on his appearance? How do they know whom to persecute?
People can be ID'd as one or the other because of their name, or the way they wear a veil, or the mosque they pray at, or the products they buy, or the company they keep.
If you wanted to kill a lot of Sunnis you could wait outside a Sunni mosque on the holy day.
Sunnis and Shiites
Thank you.
...and if someone changes their name, their clothing and doesn't attend a mosque?
They might get killed anyway. Like the Christian crusaders who ravaged the Middle East a millenium ago, these guys reckon that God will sort out the mistakes.
Kinda like telling the difference between a Catholic and a Protestant in Belfast.

Exactly. Questions such as "What street do you live on?", "What school did you attend?", "Where do you work?"
