Installing Office XP Pro in Vista OS?

Any advice would be appreciated here.

I just purchased a HP Compaq laptop computer with Vista OS. My desktop (HP Pavilion) has XP. I have software: Office XP Pro, MS Publisher, etc. for the desktop. I want to install the Office XP Pro in the new laptop because the reason I bought it was to work on writing remotely.

If I install Office Vista, then the files would not be able to be transferred between the two computers without conflict. Also, if I use Office Vista on the lap top, it would be costly to upgrade my desktop to Vista....the computer is over six years old.

I need to be able to work on a Word Document on the Laptop and then transfer the changes to the files on my desktop when returning home.

Is it considered OKAY to install the older version of Office in the newer OS computer?

Also, must I register the installation on line? They shouldn't require the purchasing of another license if it is home use and not for business, right?

thanks in advance

Much depends on when your particular copy of Office Pro was written. Those published immediately before the release of Vista should work on both platforms. Beyond some age, they won't run under Vista at all.

If yours does work under Vista, is it helpful to know that Vista recognizes documents produced by earlier Office versions? It does. Also, using Office 2007, you can save documents in an earlier version. I know this because I've had to send word documents in the .doc extention. 2007 release uses something like .docx. So, you may be able to work around compatatibility issues - if your XP will even load to a Vista computer.

You're right. Upgrading the desktop to Vista is a terrible idea. It is a memory hog. If it would install at all it would probably be too slow to be useful.

After getting a major headache today at work thinking about this "moving" my cyber furniture to a new "home," I finally checked with a former member of the Geek Squad. He said, "Just instal it! You bought it, it's yours, so just install it in your new computer."

So....I did just that.

It installed smoothly and clean. Office XP 2002 installed on my new laptop with Windows Vista clean and smoothly. No problemos.

Then I installed my publishing software, propaint, etc. So far the only hic-up I get is the activation because I have to transfer all my files into a thumb drive and transfer them to the laptop, then uninstall from my desktop before getting rid of it. (a decision just made - one computer = one headache, two computers = two times the headaches)

Vista OS is not so bad, just have to get use to all the features of it. About the time I get use to it, they will have another new fangled OS.....(eek)

Thanks for the advice. I will let you know if I crash and burn either system. (I may crash and burn before either pc does, however - grin)

Ya got lucky. I had to update Peachtree Accounting just to have it run under Vista. Glad it's all working.
