have ya ever had a bat crawl up your leg, up your arm, across your shoulder and over ya face...
woot woot... I am BatWoman
I'm about as Batty and Blue is Daffy!
what a lovely little critter tho... he does look a little ferocious in one of the pics - but he really isn't - he's so lovely.
He's been at the school for 3 days on one of the outside walls, the first two pics on the slideshow are at school and he was definitely worse for wear and he ended up dropping in the playground. Of course, we couldn't leave him there, so we contacted the Bat Conservation folk who said that we should bring him inside - if he hadn't eaten or had anything to drink he was going to be tired and cold... and... he was - they said he prolly wouldn't last the night if we left him because it's got so cold over here again... however, they couldn't come get him
so
he came to Izzieville for a sleepover
PetShopBoy kindly dropped some mealworms off, which is what the Bat people said I should try to feed him - so far tho, he hasn't eaten - even tho he had them right by his tiny mouth. Of course in the wild - they'd be munching in flight - not at the Palm Restaurant!
so - right now, my little winged-friend has gone to zzzzzz - he's tucked up nicely in the hall porch having been flying and flying and flying - he was soooooooooo active - just lovely.
Desperately hoping he will still be alive in the morning - if I can get him to fly here then I shall take him back up to school to release him
here he is
<still flaring, loathe this nuisance illness - ack>
H&S Audit tomorrow... and, after this, the Head has handed it all over to me (oh noooooooooooooooooooooo..... responsibility - oh no!>
Morning "batwoman", how much more 'batty' can you go? This would have to take the cake, a bat crawling all over you, sure you weren't dreaming? Wait till mismi read this, she'll say "Yikes".
Actually, I said a few Yikes too, or words to that effect. The porch is a very small confined space - and when something's flying around and landing in your hair - it's a little unnerving at first. Mind you, I was with him in there for at least an hour earlier - silly really, these sorta critters totally fascinate me - it's hard to describe the sound of his wings - they're so gentle... soft...
the only thing that gave me the heeby jeebies is when he was crawling up my back and I turned and saw his wee face... and all I could think was tarantula! Oof... my little winged friend is nothing like one of those 8 legged things, coz who on earth would be mad enough to let THAT crawl on them... <errrrrrrrrr, please, no, that is not a cue for anyone to post a video of spiders thankeee very much, please no - ugh>
but other than that, I think it was kinda special being that close to a bat - yep, that sounds completely doolally doesn't it - it was special tho. This little critter is amazing... there's a long eared flying mouse abooooooot this hooooooooose!
((((((((((MaMaVerby)))))))))))) - thinking of you and wishing you happiness. x
I don't mind bats...but the whole crawling up my back and turning to see the wee face well...Izzie you amaze me. I think of Cinderella and all her little beloved creatures. You seem to draw them all in. So cool. My boys would love to hang out at your house!
Had quite the nasty little storm a while ago. I had to shut everything down. It is going to make for LOVELY sleeping weather though. Even just laying there listening to it is lovely.
I got squat done today. I sat and watched Jane Eyre with that guy from James Bond...oh man - his name was right there and it went away that quickly - anyway - it was THEE best version I have ever seen. 11 episodes. Which is why I didn't get squat done. I will have to double time tomorrow.
munching in flight - not at the Palm Restaurant loved th imagnation n that line..
as missy says u sure seem draw them all in.. u hav a collectn!! y dnt u do a ppt by th way.. was penny a live creature by ne chance?
th anniv celeb went as clumsy as it cud get..i dnt hav nethng to gift..not even a pleasant smile... was sulking..so much wen he gifted me pair of earrings,...
cut th cake n th wee hrs coz he had kept th alarm at 12 nd dozed off..
so early morning as i stepped out of th bedroom there sat n th dining table a cake and a candle..and 2 of our recent snaps framed... and hidden behind one of th frames was ths box of tiny earrings ...
Verby...don't you worry sweety! Sometimes it's good to let them take care of us! He is so sweet! You are blessed girl! He knows you, and what you are going through now. Don't let this bring you down. Next occasion you will be able to do something for him that you feel makes him happy. I am sure he is just happy to have you and sweet H. Hugs hun.
Good Morning! It is gully-washing here. I mean pouring down the rain. I hate I have to get out in it. But I must
Of course you're always good Dutchy!
Roberta - so glad to hear the good news! I know that has to be a HUGE relief!
Izzie I hope that little bat made it through the night and that you are able to release him healthy. I know it is a worry.
I hope each and every one of you have (or had) a good day!
Thank you miss sunshine and a big hello to miss india, was 104 today, it is a very balmy evening and I'm sitting outside sipping a cold beer and chewing a packets of peanuts whilst watching the Australian Open tennis championship. Come on Aussie come on.

Izzie, re: the bat, I have to keep reminding myself that rabies isn't a big concern in Britain. It would be here. I wouldn't want one touching me. We have bats in our "belfry" up at the schoolhouse. I appreciate their mosquito-catching qualities but we're going to have to evict them sooner or later.
Verby, careful where you change that little guy's diaper -- his nozzle is multi-directional!
Hi to the rest of the crew. Have had a busy day off today getting a jump on "spring" cleaning -- or maybe I'm just late with the pre-Christmas cleaning. Anyway the place is cleaner!
did you know it is illegal to take a photograph of a bat? (I did actually know that from our juvenile roost at Links Tor - but had completely forgotten)
did you know also that if you handle a bat you are supposed to have 3 rabies innoculations after <there has never been an outbreak of a rabies type disease in brown long earred bates in the UK - but it's precautionary to have the shots so says the professionals OOOOOOOPS>
my bad
sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit!
OOOOOOOOOPS AGAIN
anyhoo - I took my winged friend up to the school this morning - quietly slunk past the Health & Safety Auditor and put the bat in a box in my office masquerading as a sellotape container.
Found and phoned the Bat Conservation people on the number that Walter had posted above and had a very good long chat with a wee gal there who advised me of what 'to' and 'not to' do.
What to do was... call my GP (haven't done) and NOT TO RELEASE THE BAT.
So, then made various phonecalls and weirdly, one of the contacts they gave me was the Headteacher of a school in Cornwall who is the BatLady - so had a very long chat with her - it's kinda strange talking to other Headteachers. It was she who was telling me about requiring a license etc etc etc to photograph... anyhoo - she was really lovely too, and very helpful
then managed to get someone from a little more local to come and pick up the bat - she will look after him/her (apparently it is obvious if it's a him or a her - not that I was wishing to discover that) and she will bring him back to the school at a later date to release him so he can find his roost - at the moment he needs to be fed up (which means beheading meal worms and force feeding said litle furry friend.... no no no - no cannee do that methinks)
so, the bat is now safe and hanging out at the ranch
I feel fine and hanging around the deck
and
onwards and upwards
Very tired after a long day - we think we may have got 99% in the audit... ha - no-one's perfect a?
back in a bit...

@Tai Chi,
oh good lawd - we cross posted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good to see yout TC - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - in the UK, bats are protected. Location is theirs and relocation is not permitted unless there is a very very good reason. At Links Tor we were bat registered (who knew ) so, we weren't even supposed to go in our loft - which was massive. We have bats in the loft at school, again, we can open the loft hatch and put stuff up there... but, we're not allowed in - the bats rule the roost!
did you know it is illegal to take a photograph of a bat!!!!
