15 bells. Nope....That's too many.

Do you mean 3pm? That's be 6 bells, wouldn't it? Bloody long time since I was at sea. (more than 20 years!)

@margo,

As any old salt will tell you, you can't have too many belles.

And
No-one has shown any interest in my "anchor's a-weigh" observations yet.
But please yourselves. Remain in abject ignorance, see if I care. It'd take me ages to type it out, anyway.
Sniff.

Moi - bloody knackered. Just in and waiting for the wood burner folk to arrive... then off to fix a computer <ha, must be mad asking me to do it Shocked>, then expecting Tesco to deliver fodder around 10ish.

So, so tired, joints are really nasty and my jaw is locked - which makes it hard to speak (this is good for those with ears) and massively snowed under at work - my boss is none too happy with me having an op - hey ho - nem'mind. <lalallalaaaaaaaaaaaaaallala>

Talking of snow - up North is expecting the first snow of the winter season - already! It's got mighty chilld down this way but the sun is shining along with the showers - saw theeeeeeeee most gorgeous rainbow today - super stunning.

oooooooooooh oh oh oh I think the man is here to do the woodburner... dawgs howling... gotta go

@FlavourQueen,
Hello FavoriteFlavourQueen.
Izzie,.hello and hello.
Hasty hellos across the deck, beyond waters as well.
Running late, not just today, tomorrow or the days that have past.
Blur.
...with a capital T. No regrets.
Moon is really a crescent shape. Fading out darkened entirety. That is better.
Fall booming, blooming. Stay.

Warm tidings to all.

@FlavourQueen,
More synchronicity, F.Q. My mom had breast cancer which was discovered by an examination via a doctor. She lived to be 93, hun.

This was her favorite hymn.

Okay then. Here goes: A DISSERTATION BY PO McTAG

"Anchors away!" cf "Anchor's a-weigh!"

The former might prompt the response "I wondered what that big splash was, bo'sun!"

The latter is very important, or used to be.
In the days of sail, before the advent of tugboats and auxiliary engines, getting the anchor up was a very tricky operation. Tricky because the ship, which might be large, was often anchored in the company of other ships, and once "un-stuck" from the bottom, was at the mercy of tide, currents, and wind...and a potential danger to herself and others. So in weighing anchor, it was vital for the officer of the watch to know the point at which the anchor was going to be broken free. When all the slack in the anchor cable had been taken up (men round the capstan, la la la, all that), the call would be made "Anchor's a-weigh", meaning, all the weight of the anchor is now coming onto the cable, the ship is free of the bottom.

Okay?

But since the yabber-liner has her own engines, we don't need to bother with any of that. The captain can just put a CD in the player and send for another rum.

@McTag,
On the more legal point: when "anchors aweigh", the ship is free, on move. And that is noted by the officer of the watch/navigator in the logbook. (When the anchor is fully up - that's of minor interest ... only if it get up too fast and damages the ship's side) Which means that the anchor ball has to be down, at night, the lanterns are lightened (and the anchor lantern shut) ...

Thank you, Walter, I have tried to explain the same exact thing to McTag several times. Maybe he will listen to you.

@Walter Hinteler,

Many moons ago, my pal Fred was a midshipman on the battleship HMS Anson.

Once, the Officer of the Watch (who later in life became a top admiral) gave the order too soon, to drop the anchor. The ship was still moving, too fast.

Now a battleship's anchor, like the ship itself, is a not insubstantial item. It was only by great good fortune that the anchor and a lot of expensive chain was not lost.

"Anchor's away, No 1." "Oh deary, deary me."

Had that gone the other way, that chap's career would have been over, no matter how much brass he polished.

Miss you too hun. It is crazy. I feel like I am spread much too thinly. But I try to come by here as often as I can. Love you.

That tugboat clip made me spew my water all over the place...then the boys had to come watch it. Oh my - and the boat popped right back up. Amazing.

Hugs to all the crew. Missing you all!

@Dutchy,
Helloooooooooooooooooooo Crew

Ima here Bosun!

Right hand down!

Just dropping by quickly before I settle down to a movie with S-boy!

Got a fire going (yay for being unbaffled) - yumbly scrumbly carrot and orange cake on a plate, cuppa ...and... in recovery mode.

Just to also let you know that Charlie has had 3 sessions of radiotherapy now, and tho not quite feeling a ray of sunbeam with the clanging noise which was not expected whilst being zapped - hopefully today, in our romanticised little world we choose to live in, she will be home thisavo with a little halo shine around her

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk41/LzzieIzzie/okeydokey/DSC07494.jpg

blue skies ahead, sis! 17 to go.

Soooooooooooooooo, had a fantastic time with Auntie Mame - it was so good to see her for real!!!!! So easy! We have video talked often so ... meeting her in person, having a real hug - well, that was icing on top of the cake. No sooner had I arrived home from work and the Honeymooners arrived, we gabbed and gabbed and gabbed - I then picked up the little fella - we then gabbed and gabbed and gabbed - went for a lovely meal at the Peter Tavy Inn - all kinda sharing the starters, main courses and "puddings" between us - little bit of his, little bit of hers (yuk to the Lemon Meringue Ice Cream but yay to the Creme Brulee's), pass the deep fried camembert (yum yum) - came home around 10ish and gabbed a lot more Very Happy Guitar out, little bit of blues, little fellas got a tuned guitar too now - brill.

By this time tho my dearly departed body had given up the ghost Rolling Eyes so Thursday was a struggle at work and I was out of it yesterday evening. Today tho, not as bad Very Happy but needed to take it real easy and not moving too much - tomorrow will be back up and running no doubt.

It was FAB to meet Mame in person and, if the mass of cells commonly known as IzCrahppyBody can get themselves together instead of falling apart, then, as we're now on half term - we may try to get up to London next week and join them in London with the Baz, before they fly home to Canada.

It was great!

Loved it.

Photos - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN! Shocked

OK... settling down for a lie down for a couple hours but will be back thisevening Razz

(things with R are off the wall again... Sad so hard, so so hard, and so it goes...)

Laterzzzzzz lovelies...

steady as she goes!

@Izzie,
I hope that Charlie is tolerating the radiotherapy well. She will need extra rest.

Do you have photos of Mame's visit that you can share with us, Izzie?
