so whats your favorite epic movies? the type of movies with a ton of different emotions, movies about a big event/ big deal, or someone with a big mission, etc.. or just a really damn good movie, ill start with mine.
in no order
.braveheart
.gladiator
.the patriot
.the good the bad and the ugly
.its a wonderful life (just cause its really good)
Hard to make such a list quickly, but:
Ben Hur
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2001: A Space Odyssey
Gandhi
Jesus of Nazareth (I'm a non-believer, but this is a great movie)
Also, I'm not certain whether "Highlander" qualifies as an epic. It is about one man's development over centuries, about heroic deeds, and about a struggle between good and evil over centuries. If it qualifies, I'd have to include it in my list of favorites.
Ben Hur
Titanic
El Cid
Good Bad Ugly
Gone With the Wind
Lawrence of Arabia
Ben Hur
Ivan the Terrible, Part I and II
2001: A Space Odessy
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Hard to limit it to five, so the next five:
A Passage to India
Titanic
King Kong (including the Peter Jackson remake)
Ran
Alexander Nevsky
I catch myself watching The Ten Commandments just for the absolutely ridiculous Sunday School script. "Oh, Moses, Moses, Moses..." "Oh, Cecil,
Cecil, Cecil..."
The Godfather I & II (counts as one, right?)
The Unsinkable Molly Brown
Gypsy
I've got two more...
My Fair Lady
The Music Man
Jeremiah Johnson
Grapes of Wrath
The Dirty Dozen
Gladiator
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Lawrence of Arabia
2001
Gone With the Wind
On golden blonde
Mr. hollands anus
sperms of endearment
inspect her gadget
saving ryans privates
I agree with all the movies listed (OK, not Bear's). You also might want to check out some Epic Wannabes or adventure movies made before special effects took over:
The Warlord - with Chuck Heston
The Vikings - Kirk Douglas (did anyone mention Spartacus?)
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves- Errol Flynn
Brandon - are you thinking of the Franco Zeffirelli version of "Jesus"? I love that version too. Olivia Hussey is just the hottest Virgin Mary in that.
Green witch snubs my picks. that hurts.
Well, that's nitpicking!
Although "Jesus of Nazareth" is a superior effort to Mel Gibson's slasher flick version, it was a TV mini-series, not a theater released film. So there's my nitpicking.
citizen cane
grapes of wrath
Avalon
Cinema paradiso
I personally felt that THe Warlord fell short. Particularly in the under-use of Richard Boone's talent. He was relegated to a few bellows and no dialog.
