Prokofiev's 6 Sonata, 1st movement. This is the first of his three so-called War sonatas, so called because they were written during the second World War. This is not for a Prokofiev initiate. This is hardcore Prokofiev, his most extreme and adventurous, where dissonance becomes accepted as consonance. It took me 6 listenings to digest this work, but it was worth the effort. I believe it is prokofiev's ultimate work.

Performed superbly by the sixteen-year-old Evgeny Kissin.

Here is a pretty good version of Widor's toccata from the 5th organ symphony. There is an inset showing the foot pedal action.

The Polovtsian Dances. This is a scene from Borodin's opera Prince Igor. You will recognize the opening theme as that which became the popular song Stranger in Paradise.

Prince Igor has been wounded in battle and captured by the Muslims. He is lying in delirium and imagining this scene.

@coluber2001,
Thanks for providing the context of the dances. I'm very familiar with them, but didn't know the story. They're some of my favorite Russian nationalist musical pieces.

@InfraBlue,
The context may vary in the different choreographies of the Opera. I don't really know, but looking on YouTube, I think this one may be different. I always thought the Opera was about the Russians in the caucuses, but it turns out it's older than that and the Muslims were up around Novgorad.

Harmonielehre III: Meister Eckhart and Quacky. Written by contemporary composer John Adams.

The title was derived from a dream Adams had about his daughter, Quacky, riding on the shoulders of 14th century Christian Mystic Meister Eckhart.

John Adams has a large repertoire and is a master of timbre and harmony.

Prokofiev's War and Peace, the last 5 minutes. Field Marshal Kutuzov sings a short Aria then the chorus comes in and finishes it. Stirring!
Filmed by somebody sitting in the audience.

@coluber2001,
Ten Beethoven songs you've heard and don't know the name of. More Lord Vinheteiro. I think he's funny.

Shostakovich plays Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue #24. Two themes in the prelude and two fugue themes. His last Prelude and Fugue and, I think, his best.

The Columbia Jazz Combo

And orchestrated tango by Stravinsky at a slow tempo. Unique music and orchestration, worthy of your attention. If you're a little familar with Stravinsky, it may throw you a bit. Stravinsky constantly. changed his style throughout his life.

Pulcinella Ballet, music by Igor Stravinsky. This is an excellent 42-minute, often-overlooked ballet with Stravinsky in his neoclassical stage.

Baslet Ballett, Academy of St martin-in-the-fields, Sir Neville Marriner conductor.
Heinz Spoerli, choreography.
