"Internal discourse" is rarely spotted even in adults as evidence of the arbtrary nature of social reality.
When we evoke the "I", we partition off any contradictory aspects to the purpose in hand. For example "I the teacher of no smoking" is partitioned off from "I the occasional cigar smoker" .

Okay, so I'm aware that "teaching" is always something of a theatrical performance, but I argue that so is most of life...hence the need for that elusive "truth" or "certainty" grasped with both hands by those who believe themselves to be "born again".

This cynicism does not necessarily lead to a negative outlook. It makes me more tolerant of fluctuations in myself and others and opens the door to an appreciation (if not the practise) of mystical concepts of "selflessness".

Most excellent Fresco;

Could we say, differentiate between token (for positive purposes) hypocracy;
and 'hard core' (never looked in a mirror) hypocrites!

I 'love' it; and soooooooo true! Laughing

(not that i would ever do it myself, you understand! Shocked )

You know, Fresco? It was difficult for me to internalize the germ of your response because of the poetic nature of it. Perhaps that's just Letty saying: "Escape into the sound of language--it's safe, there".

And to Bo of Toronto, a childhood song:

There's no hidin' place down here,
There's no hidin' place down here.
I went to the rock to hide my face,
And the rock cried out no hidin' place,
There's no hidin' place down here.

Oh, the devil he wears a hypocrite's shoe,
Oh, the devil he wears a hypocrite's shoe.
Oh, the devil wears a hypocrite's shoe,
If you don't watch, he'll slip it on you.
There's know hidin' place down here.

Shocked Where did that come from? Got an answer, Fresco? Very Happy

Bo

Your "polarity" also says it all !..and "token" versus "actual" hypocracy is for some writers the difference between being "awake" and "asleep".

Letty

I like your little song. The idea of the Devil being involved in "partitioning" is also expressed in the story of the exchange between God and the Devil looking down on the activities of humans. God says "Look ! That one's found a real piece of knowledge ...arn't you worried?" "No" says the Devil. "He'll take it apart to analyse it and render it useless !"

Seems to me a piece of 'real knowledge' would get both god and devil to look nervously at their 'shoes'! Twisted Evil

Oh, my goodness, Bo. Where in the world is Frank Apisa? His being agnostic would throw a new shoe into this thread. Then, of course, there are those of us who go barefoot...
