I am buying a pressie for a Cognac-lover. Since I know next to nothing about this drink, any hints on what to get?
I got about a hundred bucks to spend and want something decent. I know Cognac is pretty pricey but can you recommend something that will impress?

All cognac is good, it is just a difference of age and house style between them, really. I would shop around for a V.S.O.P. or better, but X.O. is probably out of your price range. The Meukow Napoleon cognac is delicious (it's one step down from the X.O., and one above the V.S.O.P.) and has way cool packaging. Here is one link for purchasing, with a very good price indeed:

My favorite are the Hine cognacs, but the good ones are really pricey.

That Meukow looks good and I had spotted a Hine 42, 1975 on the other site which sounds rare for just over a hundred bucks. Time to go shopping!

Another thing you might consider is Calvados. This is an apple brandy that is also wonderful to cook with. It is not at all sweet, but there is a hint of apples in the nose. Ranges in price from $20 and up for 750ml.

A good calvados is as expensive as cognac.

Here ya go, heeven ... if ya really wanna impress somebody, try THIS

For the best value, get it by the case; you save over $900/bottle that way Mr. Green

Seriously, Randall's Internet Wine and Spirits has decent prices, an excellent selection, and ships promptly. Take a look around there.

If I were pushing a product on which you could save $900.00/bottle by the case, I would ship promptly. Hell, I'd hand carry it within the contiguous 48.

Heeven,

You might be daring and give your friend a bottle of
Armagnac brandy. Cognac and Armagnac are wine growing regions in France. Both brandies are quite distinct.

Amagnac is priced about the same as Cognac.
