Quote:Yes, but, some 50s performers were songwriters. For instance, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Carl Perkins, Ben E. King, Chuck Willis.
True enough edgarblythe, but they were rarities. Just like in country music there are a few, Garth Brooks, Clint Black, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Dolly Parton. But the majority of country singers sing other peoples music for instance George Straight.
Yeah,where´s jazz in the poll?
Other?
The 60´s was,for me,THE decade for jazz.I love the stuff but I voted "British Invasion" due to my penchant for The Beatles.
Music?
Does anyone still listen to "folk music". Seems to me, that America has changed and with it the disappearance of "folk music".

The best of American jazz is from the 1920s.
Also........love that Jazz Tap Dance!
We obviously disagree New Haven.
Growing up in Chicago and having studied professional dance in NYCity, all I can say, is love that
beat, beat, beat of ALL THAT JAZZ!
Now we´re getting somewhere.
There should have been a few more genres from which to choose. I picked "Other", as in the 'Sixties, as now, I enjoyed jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, rock of most flavors, and even classical and ethnic. If I had to pick a 'Sixties favorite, I suppose it would have to be psychedelia ... Airplane, Big Brother, The Dead, that sort of thing. But then, I just enjoy good music well performed regardless of genre, though I am forced to admit I question the "musicality" of some current popular fare.

Yes, I was too hasty arranging that poll. Even I was dissatisfied with it.
60s Pre British Invasion rock is generally passed over as leftover 50s rock - and so it is, for the most part. It is generally more mellow, less hard hitting than the early stuff. I guess the excitement was gone to many of us - plus, we who were there at rock's inception, were getting older, tired of serenading sixteen year old girls. I had begun including Tony Bennet in my list of most listened to artists, partly because he was at his peak (and quite good) partly because much of the rock was unsatisfying. It did not get good again until the Invasion took place and Dylan went electric, in my view.
Big Brother and the Holding Company? Loved them!
It is true that a lot of great jazz was coming along then... but I didn't learn to appreciate it 'til later.
As a child of the sixties I was listening to the radio and buying a few LP albums... I think I had five. I remember my college roommate had a Glen Campbell... who I detested except for Lineman and a Jose Feliciano, which was OK. I would play my White Bird and Revolver and Doors.
I love "Revolver" Piffka.Great music to shave to.(Next time you´re giving the legs a once over).
Haha. Good Day Sunshine... I remember the first time I heard that... after an all-nighter with some friends, we were headed down the freeway at lightning speed and somebody says, here it is, that new song I was telling you about. It was cranked up full blast and we sped on down I-5 into the morning sun. Whoosh. We were so cool. As I recall, the DJ liked it so much he played it three times in a row. By the third time we could sing some of the words.
A DJ with taste no less!
"And Your Bird Can Sing" is one of my faves.
I especially like (besides those mentioned) Here, There and Everywhere, and the Taxman, and Eleanor Rigby, and She Said She Said, and I've Got Time.
I still adore the Doors. Good songs those. Break on Through, Whiskey Bar, Soul Kitchen, This is the End (my only friend, then end)... Whiskey Bar may be my favorite from that album.
Does anybody have the lyrics to a Doors song that goes
Not to touch the earth Not to touch the sun
Nothing left to do but run run run - Let's run
The president's corpse in the driver's car
OK, Boss.
Not To Touch The Earth
Not to touch the earth
Not to see the sun
Nothing left to do, but
Run, run, run
Let's run
Let's run
House upon the hill
Moon is lying still
Shadows of the trees
Witnessing the wild breeze
C'mon baby run with me
Let's run
Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let's run
The mansion is warm, at the top of the hill
Rich are the rooms and the comforts there
Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs
And you won't know a thing till you get inside
Dead president's corpse in the driver's car
The engine runs on glue and tar
Come on along, not goin' very far
To the East to meet the Czar
Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let's run
Whoa!
Some outlaws lived by the side of a lake
The minister's daughter's in love with the snake
Who lives in a well by the side of the road
Wake up, girl, we're almost home
Ya, c'mon!
We should see the gates by mornin'
We should be inside the evenin'
Sun, sun, sun
Burn, burn, burn
Soon, soon, soon
Moon, moon, moon
I will get you
Soon!
Soon!
Soon!
I am the Lizard King
I can do anything
