My Horse Has the Trots!

Reply Mon 10 Dec, 2007 04:49 pm
I have two horses, brother and sister. Hank is having a problem with diarrahea. Indy is not. From what I have looked up on the net it seems Indy should have it also if it is caused by food or something contagious since they are so close.

We did just plant winter grass in the pasture. Maybe that is causing it? We feed Hank and Indy hay and steamed cleaned oats twice a day. They are both eating fine, drinking plenty of water, no lethargy. Hank seems fine except for the diarrahea. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Something I can give them or not give them to help?

Would, of course, like to avoid a vet bill if I can and Lord, Hank hates that horse trailer! Shocked

I just had to answer because I love the thread title. Not that I know that much about horse care.

My question would go to the cause. Are you sure they're eating the same foods, in the same quantities (more or less)? Maybe one is, er, getting more fiber than the other. I agree that you'd expect them both to be afflicted so I'd start to look at differences in diet, exercise, exposure to disease, etc. Or is one stressed more than the other?

Lots of thoughts off the top of my head, no solutions, I wish I could help more. Perhaps it'll be a sign of improvement if he gets the canters. Smile

The canters! ROFL! Yeah they definitely eat the same amount of the same thing. They both have their own space and buckets that they eat out of. I really don't think it's the food, but heck, what do I know? Hank is a pretty high strung horse. He's half paint and half thoroughbred. His momma was a racing horse. Nothing stressful going on around them so no conditions have changed except for seeding the pasture. We were assured it was safe to plant the winter grass with the horses there.

They were also recently wormed and got their West Nile Virus shots. I'm really at a loss as to what it might be.

Thought I'd throw their pics in.

Some sort of allergic reaction to the shot?

(Also here just for the title, don't mind me.)

Well, it's been about two weeks since they had the shots Sozobe so I'm not sure. I was just trying to think of everything that's going on with them to try to pinpoint this.

Our vet is 35 miles away and Hank is almost impossible to get into that horse trailer so if we can avoid a trip to the vet I'd sure like to.

How long ago were they wormed? Shots?

The worming medicine can cause intestinal distress if it was very recent - but not likely the cause if it was a few weeks back.

How long has he had the trots?

Does he drink from a pond, and she prefers a tank?

Ok let's see, it's been about three weeks they had their shots and they were wormed at the same time. No, they have no access to a pond or stream or anything. We have water troughs that are kept clean and filled. He has been having this problem for a couple of days.

Probably just a little bug. A couple of days isn't dire. Keep plenty of water in front of him and continue to monitor both of them. If both have been exposed to something, she may have a stronger immune system or may be lagging a couple of days behind in her response. If you have a thermometer, you might check his temp. That would be helpful to know, especially if farmerman stops by. He'll know more about this kinda thing.

Could be the seeding, I suppose. We had trouble with mares being on fescue. Could also be the hay - make sure it's fresh.

If you need help getting him in the trailer this weekend let me know.

I won't be able to help, but you can still let me know.

(They are beautiful, btw)

Take his temp? Shocked I'm assuming a regular thermometer wouldn't work?

Thank you, they are beautiful, aren't they? Indy is mine and Hank is my hubby's. He's more like a pet to my husband than anything. He worries about Hank so I told him I'd try to get some advice.

I will keep a good eye on them both. Thanx!

Did you say he was hubby's pet? Maybe this job would be better suited for him since they're so close ;-)

Do you use Ivermectin for worms?

Send a PM to cowdoc, hes a big animal specialist. We usually lose a sheep or lamb or two each year but you gotta take care of those 2 beauties. They are awesome looking. I love Aps .

On Sat last I was helping a neighbor that had some foot rot problems in one of his draught horses. Its been really wet and he didnt inspect his team as carefully as he should. Boy did that stink, but the horse, as huge as it was, was as gentle as a lamb.

The last time we got them wormed the vet did it. He shoved a hose up their nose and voila! Inbetween those wormings we use the Quest gel. I will send a PM to cowdoc and I thank you for suggesting that!

Indy's (the paint) sire is 16.1 hands and I think she's well on her way to catching up. I used to have a website with his picture but lost it when I burnt up my hard drive and haven't found it since.

I need to ask Cowdoc about breeding her also. I want a baby Indy! Here is a pic of her at five months old:

Do the horse plops look like theyre normal and wet, or do you see any worms or blood? The more I think about it, the more Im inclined to recc that you call your vet to come to you.

I haven't seen any blood or any visible worms. He's just runny. I think I will go ahead and call the vet tomorrow. Don't want to take any chances. I just hope he didn't get into some kind of plant out there that could really hurt him.
