After my wife read the poem I wrote for my granddaughters cedar chest, she suggested I write one for the cedar chest I made for my stepdaughter when she was 18---10 years ago. I want it to express the feeling that I consider her my daughter even though no blood if mine runs in her veins.

Hmmm, well I think you have the kernel of the idea, e. g. she's your daughter even though the link isn't purely biological. Perhaps something along the lines of love making its own double helix (like DNA)?
