Well, having (I think) got the E drive problem referred to in another thread straightened out, I have pinpointed (I think) the problem that is causing my computer to shut down whenever I try to enter dollars and cents in Works Spreadsheet.
When I enter a dollar amount and go to Format>Number the computer reports an error, shuts down, and restarts. It appears that the difficulty lies somewhere in Microsoft Works Fonts Cache, but how to repair it I have no idea.
I've tried System Restore to no effect.
Reinstalling Works Suite 2006 didn't help.
Any suggestions (simplest language, please) welcome.
Don't use Works' Spreadsheet.

So what do I use? Excel? Can I get that freestanding or is it only available in Office? Can I transfer my Spreadsheet info to Excel?
It was just a suggestion.

I appreciate the suggestion, but can you answer any of the other questions?
I have no idea what would cause this behaviour. A font problem should not cause your computer to crash. I would suggest that you run a full virus scan and some spyware scans first, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D to start with, and maybe MS-Defender as well.
If that doesn't fix it, sure, you can buy Excel standalone, but the best deal is to get the student discount for Office. Do you have a college student at home or in school? Maybe you are one? You could also use something like Sun's Star Office, which is only a fraction of the price and emulates MS-Office.
I need more information.
What O/S are you running? What version of Works are you using?
You can get Ad-Aware SE for free here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
And Spybot S&D here:
http://www.safer-networking.org
These are Timber (RIP) approved and proven shareware antispy programs. I use them regularly. Spybot has an "Immunize" feature - that thing really works - it has kept my computers quite free of spyware.
Please let me know. I'll do what I can.
